Re: Replacing "Dean"
I think Emily should have been retired. I guess damage has less relevance than politics, because Gordon's been used twice since the really deadly one. I don't understand why they hang on to these names so carefully. Australia replaces theirs all the time. I'd like to see the lists combined into one. This is the fifth Dean already whereas we've never had Van or Wendy.

Oh and I'm still confused as to why Emily wasn't retired...
Edith made landfall as a Cat 5 and wasn't retired...

I'm in the camp that says it's bad mojo to name storms after evil fictional or real characters. So please no Damian, and I'd be iffy on Dexter (see books and Showtime tv series) as well.

It'll be retired. I'm %100 sure on that. Emily was just simply, not that bad. However, this struck Jamaica as a category four just a few miles offshore, so this has a much higher change of retirement. And it's heading straight for Veracruz, the storm's not over yet.

Emily wasn't this bad, but it was plenty bad enough to warrant retirement. It simply was in the shadow of Dennis, Katrina, Rita, Stan and Wilma.

Hurricane Dud will be a dud. No pun intended.

Re: Replacing "Dean"
A system should never be retired unless it kills hundreds of people or causes tens of billions in damge. To many storms are being retired. The pics I've seen from Dean has not convinced me at all that he deserves retirement. We will see what he will do on this last landfall.
Dean hit a area that had only small number of people living there. In 90 percent of them where gone. He maybe a cat5 at landfall, but that does not or should not make it retirable. A storm like Katrina or Charley, Andrew should be the kinds of storms retired. Never Dean.
