Lifeguards had to do numerous rescues at Siesta Key beach area due to rip currents associated with Deans waves...and one woman did not make it:
Authorities said a 70-year-old woman found unconscious on the beach Monday may have been caught in a rip current. Maria Bukowski never regained consciousness and died at Sarasota Memorial Hospital on Tuesday.
Bukowski's husband, Jozef, said she went out too far and was being moved by the waves. It is unclear how Maria Bukowski made it back to shore. The couple moved from New Jersey to Sarasota seven months ago to be near the beach, Jozef Bukowski said.

Re: A US death due to Dean???
this is sad news i just wish people would really pay attention when they are warned of rip currents, the ocean is nothing to play with its bad enough when its not rough but with a storm lurking go to a pool please people heed the warnings for your own safty and the safety of others who have to do the rescues

Re: A US death due to Dean???
IMHO do not think this was related to Dean. On Monday Dean was passing south of the Cayman Islands, hence the waves from Dean would have to had pass through the Yucatan Channel & then go for the West Coast of Florida. Plus NWS Tampa/Ruskin said nothing in there forcast on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday about dangerous surf/rip currents or even small craft advisoirs at all. Thoughts & comments welcomed.

The rip currents may have been associated to the gusty winds generated between the low pressure of Dean and the high pressure over the south of the United States. The close proximity of the isobars do to the large difference in pressure caused the wind to increase in velocity and thus creating larger waves. It's sad that this poor woman died, but I guess there should have been a rip current warning in the beach announcing the danger in the water. If this person violated the warning, she paid the ultimate price.
Who is responsible for the death? Well, we should charge it to the high pressure and to Dean in a inderect manner.
