Under the laws established in 2001, if it keeps its LLC, which is very unlikely over such a mountanous terrain, it will still be called Dean in the EPAC. If it's LLC dissipates and the remnants develop in the EPAC, then it will be Gil.

Interesting. I have never heard such a thing like that. Rarely any system keeps its LLC over the mountainous terrain. I usually would think if a storm croses over into the Pacific or Atlantic, they are given a different name based on the basin they developed in.

I wonder just how often an LLC would actually survive a passage across Mexico or Central America enough to keep its name. I have never seen it happen.

12Z GFS kept trackable 700 mb vort max across Sierra Madre, strengthened it back up a little, and tracked it near Cabo san Lucas and up the Baja.

I think it has a shot. It's nearly back over the water and it still has a noticeable circulation on the VIS.
I'm curious if it can regenerate once over the Pacific.

It won't have much real estate before it gets into cold water anyways. I wouldn't be surprised if a piece of Dean's energy broke off and formed its own entity -- that's more plausible than Dean's mid level circulation spinning back down to the surface and reintensifying.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
1000 AM PDT THU AUG 23 2007
FOR THE EASTERN NORTH PACIFIC...EAST OF 140 DEGREES WEST LONGITUDE.
A BROAD AREA OF DISTURBED WEATHER...ASSOCIATED WITH THE REMNANTS OF
ATLANTIC HURRICANE DEAN...IS LOCATED NEAR THE COAST OF MEXICO IN
THE VICINITY OF MANZANILLO. DEVELOPMENT...IF ANY IS EXPECTED TO BE
SLOW AS THE SYSTEM MOVES WESTWARD OR WEST-NORTHWESTWARD OVER THE
NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.
IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT IF THIS SYSTEM WERE TO REGENERATE INTO A
NAMED TROPICAL CYCLONE...IT WOULD NOT RETAIN THE NAME DEAN SINCE
DEAN DID NOT MAINTAIN ITS STATUS AS A TROPICAL CYCLONE OVER THE
MOUNTAINS OF MEXICO.
ELSEWHERE...TROPICAL CYCLONE FORMATION IS NOT EXPECTED DURING THE
NEXT 48 HOURS.

It looks like the remnants of Dean have emerged over the Eastern Pacific, and been renamed 93E (Per NRL)

It would be Gil, not Dean.

It last happened in 1996 with Cesar (became Douglas as it used to be always renamed).

some women on the weather channel just said at 4pm : not to worry about anything re-emerging in the pacific from dean, it circulations was "stripped bare" over mainland mexico
now 93 goes up in E pac sorry mods but she sounds like a complete moron saying that (being a pro)

Just curious. I remember I little storm named Ivan that circled around again. As I remember, it was only a remnent that reformed out of the original circulation. Did the NHC ever apply the "law" that Hurrican gave us to that? I never did quite understand the reasoning on that, but I remember reading a fierce debate here!
