Pacific August in the EPAC

It has been a very quiet August across the Eastern Pacific basin. Flossie formed near the border with the Central Pacific and that has been the only highlight of this month so far. It's quite unusual to see this happening but it's not unprecedented. Ad you may see in the bottom graph above, 2001 had a very similar August with just one tropical system.

Climatology tells us that we should expect around 4 named storms, 3 hurricanes, and at least, one major hurricane during the month of August. August, 2007, is not over yet, but in the near future there are no indications of a possible named storm.

Interestingly in 2000 there was no ENSO phenomenom and still the EPAC managed to produce 5 named storms in August. Very similar was 2004 & 2005 with 4 named storms each.
