I found some more pictures of majahual showing varying degrees of damage from moderate to
complete destruction. I'm surprised at the variance, but some structures did withstand the surge and wind without wall failure, or at least appears to be without failure as you can only see one side of a building in a photo.

Damaged, but the house walls are intact and the sea is right nearby. A solid looking structure, it withstood the surge very well.

Confirming: Unfortunately Mexican TV news have reported 9 deaths due to floods in the central parts of the Mexican Republic.

Interesantememte murieron despues de que Dean entrara a Mayas como 5.El Meteorlogo Derek Ortt habia advertido aqui que el segundo azote a Mejico iba a ser mas tragico que el primero.

Interesting that the deaths occured in the second landfall.Derek Ortt said it well before the second landfall,that it was going to be more problematic and tragic.

What is most interesting in the photos is how all the trees in the background were stripped bare by the cat 5 winds.

remember the yucatan coast is steep and gets less surge. While the damage from those structures directly at sea level(especially the ship pier) is unquestionably surge/waves, a lot of the damage to other structures is wind. 200 mph gusts, wont kill and damage nearly as well as cat 5 surge.

I'd actually be very interested to see what kind of surge this area did get. one has to remember that Mahajual did not recieve onshore winds during Dean as its western eyewall went over this area. Winds were blowing parallel to the coast, so water wasn't being pushed directly onshore by these winds (which is what happened to the MS gulf coast during Katrina).

I'd say Mahajual got some pretty nasty conditions but might have missed the sustained Category 5 winds by a hair....those were confined to Dean's northern eyewall which (thankfully) hit a bunch of forest. Even still, the damage in this town is ASTOUNDING. Take note of Wacahootaman's post....that was a green forest and now it looks like a war zone. Incredible wind damage.

remember the yucatan coast is steep and gets less surge. While the damage from those structures directly at sea level(especially the ship pier) is unquestionably surge/waves, a lot of the damage to other structures is wind. 200 mph gusts, wont kill and damage nearly as well as cat 5 surge.

Not much chance of surviving either, if you're above ground. The bathymetry of the coastline along the Yucatan is not supportive of large surge, but it does support large waves. Also Dean was pretty big. The surge was probably around 20 ft in localized areas.

3 people died here in Puerto Vallarta, as far as I know. One person was electrocuted by a downed power line in water, another died when his house collapsed on him, and there have been multiple landslides that have destroyed many homes and taken out a major highway here. It'll take us a little bit to get back on track, since we had around 18 inches of rain, on an already saturated ground from the rainy season here. After seeing damage from all over Mexico, I think it's pretty safe to say that Dean will be retired.

SIDENOTE: I saw an awesome report on the Hurricane Hunters that Televisa did, they had a reporter go up on one of there flights while the hurricane was in the BOC, they recognized the service they do and thanked them, that just made me feel good inside.
