How much do commercials influence your buying?

Ever see a commercial or an ad in the paper and you add that product to your shopping list or, have you run right out to buy that product?

For me, yeah, sometimes but my WIFE? Depending on the time of day, if she sees a product advertised in any sort of media that she wants, she'll run out and get it!

The reason for this question is that friggin' "Hyundai" commercial, the "D'UH days!" I would not, nor will I EVER buy that make of car, SUV....

For obvious reasons, I'll NEVER purchase Head On or any of their products.

I don't watch tv, so they have no influence on me. When I used to watch TV about 15 years ago, the only thing that would get me were the computer ads, you had to have the latest

Nope. Commercials are informative for me. Sometimes a food item will look interesting. Otherwise, I am in the wrong demographic form most advertisers, 'cheap bastard' doesn't make marketers jump for joy.

I don't know that I've ever run right out, but I have seen a commercial that reminded me that I need to buy that product next time I'm at the store.

People think commercials don't really affect them, but it's amazing to see studies that show how much of an affect advertising has on you. It's almost scary knowing how subtly they control you.

Yes we are avid Mac users in this family.....

I guess my spending trends were formed years ago, I clean the way I used to way back in 1975, using a mop with a bucket and Murphy's oil soap in the water. I don't use a Swiffer (don't even know how to spell it!), I don't use disposable toilet bowl cleaners or the ones you flush away, I use a brush and Comet cleanser, I use Pledge or generic furniture polish, I use Windex or if I'm industrious, I mix up vinegar and water, using newspaper for a really great window shine. I don't use any air fresheners whatsoever, I open the windows to air my house out. I don't sprinkle products on my carpets for odors, I vacuum regularly.

In this way I don't fall for new gimmicks, especially this disposable trend. I cut up old towels and undershirts for rags.

I am so old fashioned, he he. Yeah I know it!

Half the reason for watching the Super Bowl is to see the commercials. (Unless the Steelers are playing)

I love the jolly green giant and those little elves with their cookies. I'm a little uneasy with the new restless leg sydrome drugs. I think I'd rather have restless legs than the compulsion to gamble away my house or be sexually promiscuous - hmmmmm, at 62, maybe I should rethink that second one!!!!lol

I bought a Subaru years back because of the commercials.

If they influence me at all it is because I may become aware of a products existence. Past that they do not influence me to buy. MOST commericals are degrading to the normal population of this country imo. Many seem to treat the viewer like we are morons or some type of lowlife that will buy anything they tell us to buy.

You and me both!!! I still do the floors on hands & knees, the hubby uses a mop I don't like that. You have to try this on your windows though (better than vinegar & water & newspaper)cup of cornstarch in 2 gallons of water, mix well. Use it on the windows then just dry it off with a towel-you won't believe how your windows shine! Great for all windows & mirrors!

angelwing - hey that sounds great, I will definitely try it. Hadn't heard about that mixture but it sounds like it would be better than newspaper and vinegar/water. Somewhere along the line I read that every household only needs 4 items to do all your cleaning - can't remember each one, but I know two are white vinegar and amonia and the third might be lemon scented dishsoap. Could have the third one wrong though. Can't even remembe the 4th.....but all these expensive cleaners are really a waste of your money. But do I clean this way - no, I do cheat and buy the products but I refuse to buy the pre-soaked throwaway wipes, in the pop up containers. There's one for every product out there. Now I have suggested my college aged daughter buy Chlorox wipes so she can tidy up after herself in the bathroom (sharing an apt. with 3 friends this year). I just could never use them on a regular basis - I'd feel so guilty! As if I was letting June Cleaver down or something....LOL

ROFL @ Miss Mary and Angelwing. I say anything to make my life simpler!!! The Clorox wipes and similar should make things even more clean and germ free considering the ingredients in them(no I haven't read them). JMHO. More power to you to do your cleaning however you care to.

i'd say commercials do not really influence what i actually end up buying. If i buy something and i like the product , i pretty much stick to that product. Or when things are on special in the grocery store especially, i tend to buy the sale items, so in that aspect i can try out new things, but id say price influences my purchases, not so much commercials.

but if i see something advertised on tv, what commercials do is def. make me aware of it, and id stop to look a little longer if i end up seeing it in the store. But it certainly won't make me buy it.
i've been to paid groups from time to time where you get commercials to watch, and you gotta review it, and i bring up this exact point time and again.

Umm, what are these commercials you speak of? I have one finger on the change button whenever a commercial comes on. Hate them. Most of them are stupid and mornonic. Most are geared to men in their 20's? Or with people that have medical issues, but the cure will kill you or worse....

I usually end up recording the TV show and fast-forwarding through the commericals. For example, the DVR starts recording LOST at 10 pm. At 10:30 pm, I start watching LOST and fast forward through commercials. By 11:15 pm or so, I've finished watching LOST sans commericals . .just in time for the weather on local 11pm news.

Besides, all the good commercials worth watching are on Youtube . . . like the Mac ads or the Honda one where the car is shown in parts suspended midair . . .

What is unique about those commericals is that they are entertaining by themselves . . Of the Mac commericals, three of my favorites are the one where that Wheel of Fortune-type wheel with all the flavors of Vista, bloatware one and one with all system errors. (Note: I did ditch my PC for Mac about a year ago, so these commericals are even more amusing. )

Good for you! My hubby's been a Mac user for years. Same at work too. So we also find these commercials amusing! It's as if you want to spread the word or something......LOL They really are very user friendly and we never have a virus risk. Meanwhile we have relatives who are paying $100 on a monthly basis for virus protection and having technicians come out to their homes. We just listen, smile and nod our heads. Then they assume we're having all the same problems! Ah....well, what can you do.
