Please join us tonight at 9pm edt for Talkin Tropics.
Tonight we will discuss the tropical Atlantic sprining to life as we rapidly approach the peak of the season, and what to expect.
We will spend a significant amount of time on Katrina, the lessons learned and seemingly forgotten already, and with guest Margie Kieper.
Margie put together a 16 part series documenting the surge from Katrina all along the Gulf Coast (and not just in New Orleans) for the Weather Undergroud, and she will discuss this tonight with us live:

Mike --- I'm very happy to see that you made a special effort to mention the fact that Margie will also be discussing Katrina's impact on areas OTHER than New Orleans. Not that I have anything against those folks, but after yesterday's and last night's re-visit of Katrina on her anniversary, one would think the storm didn't impact anyone else except those in N.O. When the evening was done, the words "New Orleans" were probably spoken by the news agencies on a ratio of about 50:1 in favor of N.O. when compared to the number of times the "MS Gulf Coast" was mentioned.
For sure, those of us who were so extremely impacted that live along the MS coast - and many who now live elsewhere as a result of the storm - it gets kinda old hearing time and time and time again "New Orleans this" and "New Orleans that".
Truth be known, virtually all of the land areas impacted by Katrina in N.O. were already BELOW sea level. However, all of the land areas impacted in MS were ABOVE sea level. Seems to me that's where the story should be!!! It's no secret that Mississippi's impact was caused purely by nature, which surely cannot be said about the N.O. area.
As has been pointed out so many times - albeit mostly among the more learned folks like those on S2K - Katrina's most significant impact was along the MS coastline, yet very little (relatively speaking) is spoken or covered by the major networks and cable news on that area.
I remain hopeful that folks like Margie will continue to educate the public - and if by chance the networks - that soooooo many people were impacted, and continue to be impacted, who DID NOT have a New Orleans address.

Slidell, St Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes have been forgotton about too. We are tired of the New Orleans this and that also. This was a Gulf Coast disaster, and lets not forget about our friends to the west who went thru Rita and lost everything. They seem to have been totally forgotton about.

Very good point, PR. One would think the networks would figure this out and use it to their benefit. There are "stories" elsewhere as we both agree.

Thank you for mentioning us here. Rita did take it's toll. If it is any consulation, I know how you feel about NO this and NO that, alot of them live here now and our efforts to help them immediately after the effects of Katrina where pretty much thrown back in our faces.
I still think about all the other areas effected by Katrina and wish there was something I could have done to help y'all. I'm sure it would have been much more appreciated.
I do want to say this about the poor souls that lost their lives in NO. My prayers are with you and your families.
By the way, I was watching something last night about the anniversery of Katrina and when they started lying I changed the channel, did you know Katrina was a Cat 4 when HIT NO!!! I didn't know it hit NO...
