Is the Eastern Caribbean Graveyard over?

#1 Postby cycloneye » Sat Sep 01, 2007 7:17 am

Ivan,Emily,Dean and Felix, only a few examples, haved developed or increased strengh in the so called Eastern Caribbean graveyard.I remember late John hope with his rule about systems that dont develop before they reach the islands, wont develop. But in recent years that rule has been nonexistant. Is there an explanation of why the Eastern Caribbean once a dead zone for cyclones, now has becomed a favorite place for the systems to get stronger?

it never was a graveyard. many storms have underwent RI in the EC

What it is though is either very favorable (no SAL), or very unfavorable (SAL). Right now, the SAL is on a vacation; thus, conditions are favorable.

As fo th shear in the EC... much of that is also thanks to the SAL and the low-level easterly wind surge

I think the "graveyard" are for weaker systems that don't form before they hit the Eastern Carribean. Dean and Felix formed before they hit the Carribean.

well, if john hope said it, and many other forecasters have there has got to be something to it IMO

john hope knew his stuff

p.s is the shear typically higher over the leeward (northeastern caribean) than the windward (southeast caribean)?
