The ambient pressure in the area is high, although it has dropped a bit. Typically 130 kt winds have a pressure around 928mb.

Has to be an error if it is. The pressure comes nowhere near supporting 163 kt (usually it would be sub-900 if it was that intense)...

Re: Hurricane Félix: RECON Discussion
this storm is increadibly tight and rapidly intensifying. Its pressure will be much higher for a 5 than normal.

That 3 at the end means the SFMR data is questionable. (highly, IMHO)

I've never heard of surface winds being higher than flight level winds. FL winds are only 147kts and SFRM is reporting 142kts...158kts..and 163kts...so either something is wrong or this beast is on steroids.

Maybe Felix the Cat pulled something out of his magic bag of tricks?

Re: Hurricane Félix: RECON Discussion
I think I've heard that some extremely efficient storms can have surface winds that are equal to flv winds. Is that true?

Hmmm...roughly 163 mph according to SFMR then, if that unflagged report is correct.
