Frequency of two cat 5's forming in less than a month
The frequency of two cat 5's forming (Dean..and now Felix is on his way to doing the same) in less than a month must be extremely small. Any statistics on the frequency of this occurring?
Also, what factors are coming together to cause this....has to be more than just warm water...that is a given this time of year.

i know some folks are less than impressed with this hurricane season so far...as far as U.S. threats...but this statistic alone has to elevate this season...no matter what else happens (or doesn't)... to more than a 'dud'.

I believe Aric was showing us extreme heat potential in the Caribbean on charts earlier. Well, this is the result.

One thing to remember is intensity was not well judged in the past before accurate measurements became available. It is almost certain there have been many more Cat 5's.
Some storms I believe were Cat 5 at one point:
Great Havana (1846)
Last Island (1856)
Indianola (1886)
San Ciriaco (1899)
Florida Keys (1919)
Dominican Republic (1930)
Carrie (1957)
Flora (1963)
Inez (1966)
Possibly others...

crazyc83 i think your speculative point may have some validity
but this still does not diminish the impressive/rare occurence of two cat 5's in 2 weeks very much

As the dates moved on, the intensity became more accurate while in the open ocean. That is just a partial list; there were probably more (especially pre-1950).

I can remember us both posting on how we didn't think this would develop just a few days ago.

I agree 100%.
Some of the most active seasons had no or just one Category 5 hurricane.
