In the 5 year period between 2003 and 2007(so far), there have been 8 Category 5 hurricanes. There was a grand total of 6 Category 5 hurricanes in the 25 year period from 1977 to 2002. Incredible.

Any west-moving hurricane in the Caribbean vacinity has good potential to be a cat-5. Given more frequent aircraft flights and other tools, the seeming increase in cat-5s is mainly due to better data confirmation.
