If I remember correctly, during Flossie they left from Honolulu and from San Diego. Would it not be easier/quicker to leave from California than from Mississippi? Or did they have to fly to CA from MS for Flossie?

For Flossie they departed from Hawaii. By the times it takes to go from MS to Hawaii they wouldn't have any time left to investigate the storm. Nonetheless, Henriette is close enough to MS to warrant a departure from that base.

Sorry, I should've worded it better. I remember Pojo saying that they left from both HI and CA for Flossie. Would it not be easier/quicker to leave for Henriette from California than from Mississippi?

I think what they did with Flossie was takeoff from California and make a fix thru Flossie and then landing in Hawaii then doing the next fixes taking off from Hawaii.

This is what happened.....During Flossie we flew the storm ENROUTE from Travis AFB (San Fran) to Hickam AFB and then flew out of Hickam. NOT from San Diego.

Honestly, I'm not back at Keesler to find out that question.

Vortex came back - 982mb; FL winds 71 kt (64 kt at surface?)

71 x .90 = 63.9 kts. Hurricane.

The standard from 850hPa (1500m) as this is is a 0.80 reduction. That FL wind was not taken at 700hPa (3000m). That gives 58.4kts.
