Hurricane Felix video Cat 5

#1 Postby pojo » Wed Sep 05, 2007 3:50 pm

This video was taken on the way into Felix at 2am... our pilots capture the storm perfectly. The red light is the gear handle it goes on when you hit at flight idle.

So the plane is a C-130? I thought they were all P-3 Orions. You learn something every day.

Amazing video! Those guys are seriously brave. Imagine that sort of thing being "just another day at the office".

Wow! Thanks for sharing that pojo. I had chills watching and listening. What a perfect song, one I always think of when relating to hurricanes. Major turbulence going on in there for a while. I am very grateful to all our Hurricane Hunters and the important job they do for all of us. Awesome video!

The AFRES are C130J aircraft, NOAA has the P-3 Orions.

The caption at the bottom says "When the red light is on the throttle is idle" what does that mean?

I liked the part when they were in the eye and the lightning would flash
it made the eye wall look weird. :D

The red light on the landing gear control is the aircraft's way of telling the pilots, "the throttles are at idle like you are ready for landing--don't forget to put your landing gear down." I would imagine the pilots were carefully controlling their speed and altitude so as to not put the aircraft under too much stress while flying through the turbulence, but maybe Pojo can confirm if this is what the pilots were doing. 8-)
