I designed a project to replace the pumps at three flood pumping stations in the Borough of South Williamsport this summer. The pumps remove storm water from the protected area behind a levee system. When the Susquehanna River floods the tributary streams can't discharge by gravity through gates in the levee into the river. The pumps were used in 1972 (Agnes), the 1997 (?) winter thaw/rain flood, and in 2004 (Ivan).
The contractor has started to prepare to remove the existing pumps and a delivery date for the new pumps is imminent. It will be about a 3-day process for each pump. The largest are 200 HP and are huge pieces of equipment. They'll have to be taken apart and removed in pieces, and the new ones will have to be likewise assembled in place.
We're watching 99L quite closely.......

I'm sure that with the "lull" we've had with hurricanes in this area or remnants there of, this is something you didn't think would even happen when planning on getting the new pumps installed.

I put a requirement in the contract that the contractor monitor river level predictions on the internet - I believe it's a NOAA site that makes predictions. We stipulate certain actions on the part of the contractor at certain river level, etc. So hopefully we're covered from a liability perspective, but even with that, nobody wins in the event of a catastrophe.
