The red light on the landing gear control is the aircraft's way of telling the pilots, "the throttles are at idle like you are ready for landing--don't forget to put your landing gear down." I would imagine the pilots were carefully controlling their speed and altitude so as to not put the aircraft under too much stress while flying through the turbulence, but maybe Pojo can confirm if this is what the pilots were doing.
