Port O'Conner/Matagorda Bay, TX was the landfall point for Hurricane Carla on Sept 11, 1961. One interesting note is that it was the first time many people witnessed a land falling Hurricane via radar on Live Television. Dan Rather of KHOU TV Houston, made his claim to fame from the broadcast of radar images after a big debate within the National Weather Service that live views of radar would cause panic. Hurricane Carla had a 40 mile wide eye at landfall as a now CAT 4. Interesting to see how far technology has come.

Another note, I remember watching those live views of radar images on Ch 11.
