National Registry

#1 Postby Lindaloo » Fri Jun 27, 2003 3:03 pm

For those of you being pestered by telemarketers, there is now an answer. You can go online @ http://www.donotcall.gov and register your phone number on the "Do Not Call" registry.

The website is receiving 180 hits per second, so be patient.

I think I will be visiting that web site this weekend. This is definitely good for those of us who can't stand getting telemarketing calls! :)

Linda... we have this in place and we are on it already from a list from Missouri. Do you know if we should still join the national list too?

My mother signed up this morning and as of a few hours ago, she hasn't received an e-mail saying she has signed up, yet.

I would go ahead and register with the National too wx247. We recently adopted the no call legislation in MS too, but from what I have been told that is a registry for telemarketers in my state. I assume that is Missouri policy as well.

On the national registry, telemarketers will be blocked from calling you from any state.

Tom... I have yet to receive the email from them either. Guess we will just have to be patient.

The individual state no-call lists will be rolled into the National list at some point in the future. If you register on the new national list it will just speed up the process. :-)

My parents signed up on the State No-Call list earlier when it came out. It works wonders. :)

I have not received the email yet either!!

Dennis as I understand it there are 6 million telemarketers in the United States. I was amazed at that figure. Of course, there is already a lawsuit in the works because of this.

You are very welcome everybody.

Thanks...between that an my telezapper and the registry, it should get pretty quiet around here.

Now they need to do something frightening to spammers!

I've been using this http://popfile.sourceforge.net/

I only have 2 "buckets" set up. Inbox and Spam.

So far it has filtered ~200 emails, and is getting very accurate.

I've always been leery of the telezapper. How well does it work?

For anyone having a hard time getting registered on http://www.donotcall.gov, here's a trick -- click on the "En Espanol" button once you get into the donotcall.gov site. Don't worry if you don't speak Spanish. Click "Inscibase ahora." In the next window, there are three rows of boxes that all look alike. The first small box in for the zip code and the second longer box next to it is for your 7-digit number. Enter your phone number, a second phone number if you have one, and then a cell number if you'd like (yes, telemarketers are starting to call cell phones also). Then in the final bottom box, enter your email address. Don't worry. This is the government. It's not for spam purposes. It's only for verification.

Click the button (if I remember correctly, it's "enviar," which would be the same as "Enter").

Then the next screen is to verify everything is correct. One button says "Cambiar" -- that's to change something in case you need to. Click the other one (Enviar again, I think).

Anyway, that's all there is to it. Be patient. I registered mine and a few coworkers' numbers on our work computer which is on a T1 line. It took about 30 seconds in between each screen. Just click Enter once and wait. Don't go keyboard-crazy like I used to do when I had dial-up. It only slows things down more. Just click Enter and wait while the next page loads until you are through.

We heard Sam Donaldson talking on his radio show this morning and that's what prompted us to get on it. It was worth it to wait if it means we don't have to be bugged with unwanted calls.

Good luck!
