That gives me chills Southerngale. :( And you know being woke up at night with winds howling, not expecting this I can imagine the fear these folks have. Night storms are the worst, you cannot see whats happening.

Looks like they used the .75 conversion factor with the 98 kt flight-level wind, which does work out to be around 75 kt.

no area in Texas received 100-110 mph sustained from Rita. Thsoe winds were confined to Louisiana.

Wing gusts from Rita were in that range for Rita. However, while there could be isolated gusts that hih from Humberto, the gusts lasted or many hours during Rita; thus, the dmaage shoul be significantly less from Humberto

Think I'm feeling those 85 mile an hour gusts in Beaumont! Woah! Stuff is all over the place. Haven't heard any tree limbs crack. Blows so hard with the rain it gets white.

No reason given in the NHC discussion as to why the SFMR data was ignored an instead a 75% conversion from flight level winds was used. SFMR reported a high of 83kts and another 80kts to back it up. A lot of high 70kts also. There was a 102kt reading but this I believe might have been a bad read. I guess in the post analysis the winds will be increased to reflect this data.

The most amazing thing about Humberto so far is that due to the speed with which it has grown and made landfall, no one seems to have evacuated; there was no evacuation order, whatsoever.

I would guess that the most nervous people who had planned to leave a week before the next "rita" are at home, thinking this is a tropical storm. Quite a bit different from the reaction the week before Rita.

But how could you evacuate an area the size of the Golden Triangle w/ under a 12 hour notice? lol..

 Yes THank Goodness! The wind seems to be blowing the same direction Rita did. Straight up my driveway between the houses. That's a good way for it to go. Not a pane of glass was broken on this house during Rita.

My lights have flickered a few times, but so far, so good. I can hear the wind whipping and the rain is hard. KBMT just lost electricity... they came back on the air with a generator. My mom just called... her power just went out (about 5 miles from me). Entergy on the phone at KBMT reporting thousands without power.

Many callers are reporting high winds and a lot of debris flying around. I guess we'll know a lot more tomorrow. I still can't believe how fast all this happened!

I wonder if Rita thinned out so many trees and took out so many that were borderline that we may not even have "Bonnie patch" this time? That was the main effect of Bonnie in 1986, piles of branches on lawns causing the lawn to die in a patch.
