Fewest advisories issued for a hurricane?

#1 Postby mtm4319 » Thu Sep 13, 2007 10:35 pm

The NHC only issued 10 advisories for Humberto, spanning 30 hours. Can anyone find a hurricane, much less a landfalling one, that had fewer advisories or a shorter lifespan? (I'm not counting the HPC advisories here.)

Does it have to be a hurricane?

Preferable, yes, given the question (and subject line).

Unfortunately for Humberto, there are a few.

Hurricane Vince of 2005 had 8. It was landfalling, but not as a hurricane. It was extended to 14 advisories in post-analysis. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2005/VINCE.shtml?

Hurricane Isis of 1998 also had 8, including a hurricane force landfall. It was extended to 12 advisories in post-analysis. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/1998ISISadv.html

Hurricane Bill in 1997 had 7, no landfall, and was extended to 9 advisories in post-analysis. http://www.weather.unisys.com/hurricane/atlantic/1997H/BILL/track.dat

To answer your question, the lowest I can find is 5, for Hurricane Noel in 2001. It didn't have a landfall, and in post-analysis it was extended to 12 advisories. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2001/NOEL.html

The low-number ones usually mean they either rapidly intensified in a short lifespan and hit land as a hurricane, or became a hurricane just as it was about to become extratropical (after a strong start).

Thanks for these; I figured there were a few. Let's see here...

Vince only had 8 advisories, but since they were only every 6 hours, they spanned 42 hours (more than Humberto's 30).

I'd consider Isis to have had 16 advisories instead of 8 (counting the intermediate ones), and they spanned 45 hours.

Bill had 9 advisories counting the intermediate ones, so that's fewer than Humberto... but they spanned 35 hours, it looks like -- still longer than Humberto's 30.

Noel was definitely a special case as the first advisory placed it at hurricane strength already, but based on the question posed it does appear to be the correct answer, spanning 23 hours.

My guess is they'll add a couple of post-analysis advisories on Humberto as well, but even so, it looks to be the shortest-lived Atlantic basin hurricane that made landfall as one since the NHC started issuing regular advisories on storms.
