The Cost of Losing Weight...

#1 Postby azskyman » Fri Jun 27, 2003 11:11 pm

It's no wonder we have all we can do just to stay the same weight.

For $4 bucks, you can buy 35 grams of fat for lunch. And that's biggie-sized. Filling and fun.

That same $4 on food that is good for you, but fun to eat, will leave you roaming the aisles or settling for a cup (not a bowl) of soup every day.

Whether it is low fat cookies or low fat candy or whatever low fat item you are looking for, they are most often more expensive than the fun stuff.

Not only that...but if you want to join a Bally's or LA Fitness or other club, it will cost you a lot of money. There's a hefty membership and you need to dress well and look nice too!

And, of course, who hasn't bought a nautilus or tummy tucker or treadmill? You know, the one that you sold at the garage sale last year.

I have a little will power, but I don't want to spend so much to keep on trying. Cost me $6.40 for a "healthy sub" today.

Anyone know of a place where I can get change back from $4 and healthy food that tastes good to boot?

How about the cost of gaining weight? :)

I actually gained a few pounds in the last several days. I hope to keep this up and hopefully my metabolism will slow down before the I am 30 (in 4 years)

I heard that our metabolisms slow down down at about 30 years of age.

It's not that hard not to go to McD or BK.

I'm also sick and tired of the fat people sueing that places. I could go on and on about it, but i'll start to get annoying, so I won't.

Try Atkins. High protein, low/no carbs - ixnay the sugars & sweets unless
you need a mental health ice cream fix. No potatoes, pasta, bread, sugar of any kind, fruits the first couple months. OK for Protein, veggies and fake-sweetened drinks ala Splenda. Libations: beer is ixnay; wells are ok if you stop at 2; 3 are max. Not every day mind you. Wash down with protein. You'll look great, drop a bunch of weight and you guys will have to beat them off with a stick if you talk weather on top of all that...

skyman, you are on to something. I'd say that it is easier and cheaper to eat fat foods. Hence the condition of our people.

I was on that Atkins diet and it worked!! I lost 30 pounds on it. To me, the Atkins diet is one of the best kept secrets.

Weight watchers works best for me...and it doesn't require much in the way of special foods.

My point here is that new products that come out which are better for you most often cost more than the others. Should be the other way around.

If you are referring to me, David... I don't have McDonald's and Burget King as often as I used too, which wasn't alot when I was growing up (living in Massachusetts). Now my parents (especially my father since having a heart attack and cardiac arrest on Wednesday, April 4th, 2001 during a nuclear stress test) very rarely are eating food from fast food restaurants, so that means I am not either.

I'm sick of the burger joints - I find myself grilling, more and more!

I've seen alot of success stories with the Atkins Diet. If that diet is too restrictive for you, there is one called the SouthBeach Diet Its similiar to Atkins, but allows for more carbs and fruits/veggies. I've lost 10 lbs in 3 weeks on this diet. I agree, grilling is the way to go. You know those little george foreman grills? It's my new best friend, LOL. Good luck. http://www.prevention.com/cda/feature20 ... 50,00.html

I'm a big, overweight guy and have never thought of suing any restaurant....that would be ridiculous. I don't recall any McDonalds employees ever dragging me inside and force feeding me a Big Mac and fries. :D

Heck, I've probably eaten at every good fast food and BBQ joint in metro Atlanta in my life....and have yet to ever eat a meal with a shotgun to my back forcing me to eat there :D

Those folks that sue McDonalds and other restaurants because they are too fat are IMO losers that just want to blame someone else for their own lack of control. If I sued EVERYONE that contributed to my obesity over the years just because they cooked, made, or bought me fattening things to eat.....I'd have to sue hundreds of folks...including every aunt, uncle, and female cousin I have....my grandmothers and late great aunts...great-great aunts...my late mother....my dad and all three of my sisters....many of my friends....several of my teachers and co-workers-- AND VIRTUALLY EVERY lady and teenaged girl I ever went to church with (my dad was a church pastor remember?...I always ate well on Sundays and Wednesday nights :D :D

I didn't just get fat from eating at McDonalds, KFC, and Melears BBQ. Any obese person that says they did is nothing but a deluded liar. I KNOW....because except for brief instances, I've been overweight since the age of 11.

Just .02 cents worth from a fat guy who knows the truth...the only person to blame for my obesity (and any health problems that it causes) is ME.

I am losing weight and I feel that it is the healthiest way, too. I have dropped 45 pounds and am feeling better than ever. I eat whatever I want, BUT I must keep between 25-32 grams of fat per day, 65-95 grams of protein, and 75-125 g of carbs. In addition, I walk at least 3 days a week for at least 40 minutes. This is supervised by a clinical dietician with no medical aides, with the exception of glucophage for my insulin resistance.

If Atkins works for you then that's great, but I can't stand being limited to what I can eat. I have also read where while you may lose weight on the Atkins diet, blood pressure seems to increase in most patients.

Weight control is indeed a challenge for many people. The disappointment with aging is that I eat far less, intake much less fat, and still do battle with the scale.

When I was doing best at losing weight, I was keeping close track of points (weightwatchers)...so much so in fact, that my family was worried I was becoming obsessed.

Balance in life is not as easy as it seems. Still...as is the point of this thread in the first place, why it seems to cost more to eat healthfully.

Marketing, I'm sure, has a lot to do with it.

No, Tom, not you. I'm talking about America in general. I'm getting tired of people sueing the places, because it's so not true! They just want more money so they can get fatter. Greedy little people.... :x

Okay David. I understand. If I took it the way I did, perhaps others did, as well. Thanks.
