It seems to not be well-remembered except for hurricane enthusiasts and Atlantic Canadians, but Hurricane Juan made landfall near Halifax with 100 mph winds just after midnight AST on September 29, 2003.

Many don't talk about it simply because it hit Canada. The United States is apparently the only land mass that matters to some people.
This was the worst hurricane to hit Halifax since 1893, at least. That said, it still was no Katrina or Andrew.
Speaking of Mexican hurricanes, one of their biggest hurricane anniversaries is coming up in a little over a week. One clue is that it's probably the most forgotten hurricane in at least the last 25 years.

That's true, the waters at that latitude cannot support a Katrina or Andrew though. The most they could support if conditions were perfect and it took the perfect track is probably a Category 3, assuming it stayed in the Gulf Stream as long as possible and took a sharp left late (due to a ridge in the Atlantic southeast of Newfoundland).

Juan formed in an odd spot for such a powerful hurricane as well.

Every Atlantic hurricane makes the headlines in local news here in South Florida...and yes, the coverahe of Juan was treated much like a hurricane making landfall in Mexico...a nation bordering the U.S....like Canada.
I would be curious to know what coverage Hurricane Wilma or Hurricane Frances got in Canada and other international media? Probably not the biggest stories....but they sure were here!

The coverage is about the same as a northern US state and maybe a bit less then that. I remember Wilma was the top story of Canadian news on TV when it exploded into a category 5. As for something like Hurricane Katrina, all Canadian news media had that as the top story pretty easily and spent the first 6 minutes of the news cast going over it opposed to some US media spending 15-20 minutes of the newscast on it or more.

Sounds very reasonable...storms effecting those closer to home...barring something along the lines of in depth reporting of the Mitch deathtoll (or even greater and warranted coverage for the Asian tsunami tragedy)...generally will get more coverage, especially if they effected the local viewing area.
I don't take this as an indication of arrogance or ignorance in U.S. news broadcasts...if anything, the trend has been toward much broader coverage of world storm events...including the cyclone effecting Oman earlier this year. Our interest for storm news is growing and branching out on both a national and global scale.

Another very nasty hurricane that is overlooked because of the U.S Hurricane bias. Juan did alot of damage.
A very unique Hurricane too. A storm like that doesn't come along often.

Environment Canada made an excellent site about Hurricane Juan. Lots of photographs and information.
