With a family of four and a dog and a self imposed no carry-out food policy, we spend around $125-150 a week. We made the decision not to eat take-out if we can help it several years ago. I do get tired of cooking, but you save money not carrying out all the time. And you're healtier for it too. That amount includes toiletries, cleaning supplies, detergents, etc. too. The whole shebang. I tend to buy generic items, which saves you money too.

Nope not a typo on the 200 a week for dog food. My dogs eat 100 pound bags of food in a few days. I have 5 BIG dogs. All my animals are spay or neutered and they get their shots, flea treatments etc. However their vet says they are overweight. lol. I have a St. Bernard, two Rottweillers, Irish Setter and a German Shepherd. All rescued by the way. :)[/quote]

Wow Linda...if I had to spend 200 a week on my dogs, I'd have to start eating them!

MY grocery bill comes in at around 150, and we eat out at least once a week, sometimes more depending how stressed out we get.

I can see how feeding 5 big dogs would be costly Linda! I'm fortunate I guess, the Vet put Hope on a diet. Since January she's lost 10 pounds and probably a few more since she was in the kennel last week. She weighed in at 90 in January and her ideal weight should be 75, she's a Golden. I was so proud we got her down to 80 last month. Lots of exercise, less food, virtually no doggie treats or table scraps (our downfall). But she's hardly the size of a Great Dane! So I can understand where you're coming from. And bless you for rescuing these dogs!

Your story reminds me of the segment on Animal Planet several years ago. A young married couple, w/o children yet, in their 20s regularly would adopt or take in stray dogs. They were up to 9 or 11 at that point, forget now. They owned about 5 acres all fenced in. These dogs were very well attended to. Their Vet would come to them, not the other way around. And gave them reduced rates. I wondered how in the world they ever got a break - or took a vacation? Still, those 2 people had hearts of gold, IMHO! Here they were young enough and had the money to travel, but instead used their hard earned money to raise unwanted dogs. Such an honorable thing to do.
