The lowest pressure ever recorded and largest tropical cyclone on record. Makes Gilbert and Katrina looks small.

Tip caused $1.6 million in damage on Guam.

Tip sunk at least 8 ships at sea, leaving 44 dead/missing.

Tip made landfall on Japan as a Category 1 typhoon, leaving 113 dead/missing.

Yes, they were still talking (and writing) about that one when I started working at the old NHC building later that year...

Has it been that many years - it feels like it...

Is it still really the strongest storm ever? There are several others that could have been near or beyond Tip's intensity, as there haven't been Recon flights into typhoons for many years...

Since according to that image, Tip was not an annular typhoon, I just got to wondering something.

Has there ever been an an annular typhoon? Is it possible? I don't think I've ever seen one, anyway.

There have been annular typhoons (Sepat was nearly annular at one point before undergoing an ERC and passing over a cool eddy), and annular cyclones in the SHEM (Dora 2006-07, for instance).

Strongest ever measured. However, there were likely stronger storms, but never measured directly. It is based on Dvorak technique. The candidates are Gay (1992), Angela (1995), Keith (1997), and Yuri (1991). More reason why need to either do recon or send UAVs into storms.

Yes, there have been. In fact, annular tropical cyclones are more likely to happen in WPAC.

Monica wasn't annular on radar, iirc.

Tip is the ultimate typhoon/tropical cyclone. Imagine the 1935 Hurricane covering the entire GOM with hurricane conditions. Just amazing. I cant imagine the Atlantic Basin being able to support such a large tropical cyclone.

I think he was trying to answer the question of whether there have been storms stronger than Tip.

I imagine the storm surge and waves would be very high. Think about how much damage that would do.
