Samantha Who? was a major hit last night... by far and away the biggest sitcom premiere since last season at least! It was a really good show so I'm happy.

Fast National ratings for Monday, Oct. 15, 2007

ABC got a strong premiere from its comedy "Samantha Who?" Monday, which helped carry the network to a ratings win.

For the night, ABC averaged a 10.3 rating/16 share, beating out CBS' 7.9/12. FOX, 6.5/10, came in third (with those numbers subject to change due to live sports). NBC's 5.4/8 was good for fourth, and The CW trailed with a 1.8/3.

ABC also snagged a victory among adults 18-49, drawing a 4.2 rating to edge CBS' 4.1. NBC, 3.7, came in third in the key ad demographic. FOX averaged 2.9 and The CW 1.0.

"Dancing with the Stars," 12.4/19, dominated the 8 p.m. hour for ABC. FOX's coverage of the American League Championship Series finished second at 6.6/10. "How I Met Your Mother," 5.2/8, and "The Big Bang Theory," 5.4/8, put CBS in third among households, but NBC's "Chuck" (5.0/7) had a few more viewers. The CW went with "Everybody Hates Chris" and "Aliens in America."

The conclusion of "Dancing," 13.3/19, and "Samantha Who?," 10.2/15, kept ABC on top at 9 p.m., as "Samantha" held more of its lead-in than "The Bachelor" has in recent weeks. CBS moved up to second with "Two and a Half Men," 8.9/13, and "Rules of Engagement," 7.0/10. "Heroes" scored a 6.8/10 for NBC, dropping FOX's baseball game to fourth. "Girlfriends" and "The Game" averaged 1.8/3 for The CW.

At 10 p.m., "CSI: Miami" posted a 10.4/17 for CBS. "The Bachelor," 6.7/11, was second for NBC, while NBC's "Journeyman" drew a 4.5/7. FOX's ratings for the hour weren't available.

Back to You is reportedly getting a full season very soon also.

and speaking of FOX, they have scheduled Sarah Connor Chronicles(from the Terminator franchise). It premieres on Monday January 14th at 8pm ET before 24's timeslot premiere and will remain there, apparently not move to Sundays as had been the original plan.

I'm expecting Big Shots to be pulled anytime now. ABC is not even promoting it this week, which is a horrible sign. I say good riddance...

and I think Lost is headed to Tuesdays at 8. I'm expecting an announcement in November. I don't really see where else it could go. ABC has filled a ton of holes with it's new Wednesday lineup, so that appears to be out.

Tonight is Pushing Daisies, Private Practice, and Dirty Sexy Money! 8-)

FOX ADDS TO THE MENU WITH A SECOND SEASON HELPING OF "KITCHEN NIGHTMARES"

FOX serves up another order of KITCHEN NIGHTMARES and picks up the show for a second season.
Hot chef Gordon Ramsay will hit the road again, visiting restaurants that desperately need his help while exposing the harsh realities of restaurant ownership. Ramsay will do whatever is necessary to get these eateries back on their feet; whether its revamping the menu, weeding out the wait staff or cleaning the kitchen, Ramsay attempts to transform these restaurants into grade-A establishments.

KITCHEN NIGHTMARES has shown solid growth over the past few weeks, building +20% in Adults 18-49 and +18% among Total Viewers. Additionally, the series is up +21% in the demo compared to FOX's fourth quarter 2006 time period average.

ABC Wednesday is stable! Pushing Daisies and PP have levelled off, and DSM actually went up! I LOVED all three shows last night!

Bionic Woman and Life are fading for NBC. Kitchen Nightmares is solid for FOX(I bet we see this show in the summer with Hell's Kitchen), but the comedies at 8 suck. CBS was strong once 9pm hit.

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007

CBS snagged the top overall spot in Wednesday's ratings, while ABC grabbed a narrow win among younger viewers.

Led by its crime dramas, CBS averaged a 7.7 rating/12 share for the night. ABC, 7.0/11, came in second, followed by NBC at 6.1/10. FOX took fourth at 4.4/7, and The CW drew a 2.5/4.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, ABC finished first with a 3.7 rating, narrowly beating CBS' 3.5. NBC's 3.1 was good for third, followed by FOX, 2.8, and The CW, 1.9.

NBC's "Deal or No Deal," 7.8/13, won the 8 p.m. hour over ABC's "Pushing Daisies," 6.6/11, which held fairly steady from its performance last week. "Kid Nation" put CBS in third with a 4.7/8, beating out "Back to You" and "'Til Death" on FOX. "America's Next Top Model" scored a 3.3/5 for The CW.

CBS took over the lead at 9 p.m. with "Criminal Minds," 9.4/15. "Private Practice" earned an 8.1/13 for ABC. NBC's "Bionic Woman" slipped to a 5.5/9. "Kitchen Nightmares" posted a 4.4/7 for FOX. The CW's "Gossip Girl" trailed.

"CSI: NY" posted a 9.0/15 for CBS at 10 p.m., easily beating ABC's "Dirty Sexy Money," 6.4/11, and NBC's "Life," 5.0/8.

I missed Samantha Who? but I meant to/plan on watching.

Another good delivery from Betty and Grey's tonight. Betty is so campy sometimes, I love it. The "Wanda" thing made me laugh a lot.. but the Betty storyline tonight I found annoying.

Grey's was pretty good I thought. Meredith needs to get over her problems and move on though! Sheesh.

I liked both Betty and Grey's, but I agree, Betty's plot was annoying and very out of character.

The highlight on Grey's was Callie laying the smackdown on Izzie.

and I can't believe this, but I taped Big Shots and had nothing else to do just now so I watched it and skipped through commericals and actually liked it. :wall:

The Office! Anyone watch last night's hour long episode? Nothing earth shattering happened, but several storylines moved right along. It was just a good episode, lots of laughs, etc. My favorite moments were of Jim and Dwight on the stairwell landing, Pam sympathetic to Dwight's plight (several scenes), the B & B bizarre stay, and finally.....

THE KISS! (runner up to Season 2's Finale kiss!)

CBS Wins Thursday, but 'Viva' Craps Out
'Laughlin' bleeds more than half of its lead-in

October 19, 2007

Fast National ratings for Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007

"CSI" and "Survivor" led CBS to a ratings win Thursday night, but a preview of the new show "Viva Laughlin" came up snake eyes.

CBS earned a 9.0 rating/14 share in primetime, beating out ABC, 8.2/13, for the lead. FOX grabbed third with a 7.5/12 (its numbers are likely to change some, as it had live sports). NBC, 5.3/8, came in fourth, and The CW trailed with a 2.5/4.

ABC scored a narrow win among adults 18-49, drawing a 4.5 rating to beat out CBS' 4.4. NBC finished third in the demographic at 3.7, followed by FOX, 3.3, and The CW, 1.6.

"Survivor: China" scored an 8.5/14 to win the 8 p.m. hour for CBS. FOX's coverage of the American League Championship Series drew a 7.0/11, edging ABC's "Ugly Betty" for second. "My Name Is Earl," 4.6/8, and "30 Rock," 3.9/6, put NBC in fourth. "Smallville" delivered a 3.1/5 for The CW.

CBS stayed on top at 9 p.m. with "CSI," 12.7/19. "Grey's Anatomy," 11.8/18, moved ABC into second and was also the night's top show among adults 18-49. Baseball on FOX was third, while "The Office" scored a 4.9/7 for NBC. "Supernatural," 1.9/3, closed the night for The CW.

FOX's numbers for baseball at 10 p.m. were unavailable. Among the other networks, NBC's "ER" led the way with a 6.6./11. "Big Shots" was second in households for ABC at 6.0/10. CBS' "Viva Laughlin" (5.8/10) had a few more viewers than ABC, but the murder mystery-with-music lost more than half of its lead-in audience and also fell at the half-hour mark.

HELP!

Did anyone watch ER last night? We had severe wx come thru and local Mets suspended regular programming for wx alert info, so I missed the second half of ER.

Did Abby's son Joe make it?

Thanks.

*Edit* - our local NBC received permission from NBC to reair ER early Saturday morning. So now my VCR is all set. That worked out well! They must have received a lot of phone calls.

See Brent, there are fans that still watch ER - LOL!

LOS ANGELES - Hollywood edged closer to possible labor unrest on Friday after film and TV writers overwhelmingly authorized their union to call a strike if no contract deal is reached with the studios by month’s end.

Over 90 percent of the Writers Guild of America members taking part in the authorization vote backed the union’s request for advance approval to declare a walkout should negotiators fail to conclude a settlement once the current contract expires.

FOX AXES 'NASHVILLE,' DOUBLES UP ON 'LYRICS'
By Brian Ford Sullivan (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- FOX is changing its tune on Friday nights, pulling the plug on "Nashville" and adding a second run of "Don't Forget the Lyrics!" to the night.

"Nashville," which has been on the sidelines since September 21, had tentatively been set to return on November 9.

"Lyrics" will instead assume the Friday, 9:00/8:00c slot on said date, in addition to its regular Thursday, 9:00/8:00c broadcasts.

Desperate Housewives... not as good as last week but still great. I loved Edie putting the pieces together about Carlos/Gaby/Victor. The music and panning of the cameras in that scene was awesome.

Hated Susan but it was a funny plot to start.

Bree, good grief, just TELL EVERYONE THE TRUTH ALREADY. I don't get it.

Lynette and Tom was kind of blah to start but picked up at the end.

The end with Aunt Lily dying and Dylan playing with the cello was really good.

Hope the note she wrote is found!

LOL "Because she wants to and I'm a guy". I love Carlos.

Next week! Boooooooooo! John returns! Go away!

Brothers and Sisters was also pretty good, some funny stuff, but ugh at the Tommy/Lena plot. The women at the spa was great. "What the hell is happening at that spa?" "Well that went well" LOL

and Justin has an addiction problem. How shocking.

New article on the strike and by type of show what effects there will be if it happens, Lost fans DO NOT READ the part about Lost!

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 19 — During the last Hollywood writers strike, in 1988, David Letterman gave a blunt assessment of the quality of his show.

“We have nothing to do, the writers aren’t here,” he intoned at the opening of one show. “So a guy’s gonna come in and shave me. Fifty-five minutes, ladies and gentlemen! Fifty-five minutes to go!”

Viewers may want to brace themselves for a lot of similarly jury-rigged entertainment if writers and producers do not come to an agreement on a new contract by the end of the month.

A strike by the Writers Guild of America, which could begin as soon as Nov. 1, would cut a ragged edge across the entertainment industry, with television and movies affected in different ways. Depending on the timing and length of a strike, some television shows would grind along just fine, while others would jerk to a halt. “The Simpsons” is safe, for instance, but light a candle for “Lost.” And reality shows, whose writers are nonunion, will become even more of a television staple than they are now.

Meanwhile, moviegoers would not feel any immediate impact, because studios work a year or more in advance and have been stockpiling scripts to shoot in case writers walk the picket line. But some big franchise films, like the “Transformers” sequel, are likely to be delayed. And fans could suffer later on, as films pushed earlier into production surface with poor results in 2009.

“Any time you rush movies, you disrupt the rhythm, and I can promise you the result isn’t as good,” said John Davis, a producer of “Norbit,” “I, Robot” and other movies.

If a work stoppage lasts for just a few days or even a few weeks, there would be relatively little impact on the overall entertainment pipeline, producers say. Networks have between four and five episodes for many prime-time shows ready to go, while studios are wrapping and rushing into production already written movies that are not scheduled to arrive in theaters until the end of 2008 and into 2009.

But one sliver of the business in particular faces immediate disruption. Late-night shows from “Late Show With David Letterman” on CBS to “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central are produced daily, with writers massaging the news of the day into comedic segments and monologues.

For a time, fans should expect to see repeat episodes, as if the hosts had departed on some kind of joint vacation, networks say. In the longer term, hosts like Jon Stewart of “The Daily Show” could just wing it, as Mr. Letterman and Johnny Carson did after several months of reruns in 1988. (At one point during that five-month industrywide strike, Mr. Carson filled time by looking at snapshots brought in by Ed McMahon.)

Networks say some late-night hosts could return to work without violating guild strike rules: while contracts vary, a performer writing for himself is covered by a separate agreement with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. A spokeswoman for the Writers Guild of America East said hosts could not write any more material than they personally handled pre-strike.

Daytime shows would suffer next. Soap operas like “The Young and the Restless,” viewed by some six million people a day, typically have a monthlong backlog of episodes. Because of their serial nature, soap operas do not perform well in repeats. Networks say they would try to maintain ratings during the day in the event of a strike by substituting more news and sports programming.

The rest of daytime is a jumble. News writers are represented by a different union, so “Today” on NBC and the cable news channels will be unaffected — except for the bags that will form under the eyes of anchors as they are pressed to fill more airtime. But talk shows are all over the map: “The View,” which uses union writers, would be thrown into more chaos than normal, while “The Martha Stewart Show” would continue cooking right along.

Of course, most viewers care about prime time. Although each network is different — with only two hours to program each night, and “American Idol,” which would be unaffected, on the way, Fox is sitting pretty — network executives say a couple of general rules apply.

Long-running shows like NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” are likely to stay in original episodes longer because they are further ahead in production than new programs like ABC’s “Pushing Daisies.” And the so-called sweeps periods in November and February, when advertising rates are set for local stations, still matter. So networks will keep what originals they have for those months and leave December and January more barren than usual.

Genre matters, too. Animated series like “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy,” completed up to a year in advance, are strike-proof for this season at least. Much more problematic are complicated serial dramas like “Lost,” which networks typically broadcast without repeats. With the next season of “Lost” (which begins in February) only half finished, ABC has a big decision to make: Should it show the episodes that are done? Or delay the program’s return until all episodes can be completed?

Of course, reality shows are not affected at all. Networks have been stockpiling reality material in the event of a strike. The CW network alone has five completed reality series ready to go: the returning shows “America’s Next Top Model,” “Beauty and the Geek” and “Pussycat Dolls Present,” and the new entries “Farmer Wants a Wife” and “Crowned,” about beauty pageants.

Warren Littlefield, an independent producer and the former president of NBC, who was that network’s executive vice president of programming during the last writers strike, said the news divisions would be pushed to deliver spicy specials to plug holes. He noted that the CBS newsmagazine “48 Hours” rose to prominence in 1988. Sports, concerts and shows produced in Britain and Australia are also likely to pop up in prime time, depending on the length of a strike. NBC is already looking at the possibility of broadcasting the British version of “The Office.”

The lack of a clear road map for consumers is a worry for entertainment executives. After all, movie and television fans, their allegiance already weakening as video games and the Internet eat up more leisure time, don’t need additional prodding to find something else to do.

“There is tremendous fear in the industry about breaking a habit,” Mr. Littlefield said. “During the last strike, the audience wandered and a lot of people didn’t quite come back.”

On the bright side, the 1988 strike played a big role in introducing at least one guilty pleasure to a national audience. Desperate for programming, Fox plucked “Cops” from a local station and placed it on Saturday night, where it continues to run.

There is a question I think no one has addressed is: Will the viewing audience care?

ETA:

I didn't have time to expand on this morning, I do now. .

Television (and an increasing small way, movies) are suffering from a decline of viewership. Viewers are becoming pickier about what, when and how they watch their favorite shows. We know that the networks and producers care if viewer don't come back after a strike, but what about the Writer's Guild? Are they cutting their nose to spite their face (so to speak)in the long run? I don't have the statistics to back it up, but it seems that viewers have become intolerate of strikes in Hollywood. Ever time a strike ends, less and less viewers return to TV.
