ATM frustations ...
Word to the wise, a lesson learned ...
NEVER, EVER use an ATM other than a bank's ATM ...
Last night, an ATM from the S-Mark Systems located in a convenience store in the area did the unthinkable ...
Stopping off to get money, I decided to withdraw $200 from an ATM in a convenience store located off of Hwy 78 in Ladson ... The machine came back with a denial #117 ... temporary delay, please try again ...
So I did ... and the same result ...
Well, I went to a bank ATM and tried to withdraw $200 like the two times above, and I get an insufficient funds message ... which I KNOW was full of crap because I KNOW exactly how much I had in the bank ... Anyway, I checked the balance and I have $90, WRONG ... should have been $500 ... anyway, I traced the problem to the ATM which withdrew the requested money amounts I requested earlier WITHOUT reversing the charges back into my bank account ...
I contacted the company by phone last night, and got a menu, and a please wait ... and still waiting ... so I hung up, and called back again, and got an operator, in which, she told me no one was in the office to fix the problem and I would have to call back today ...
Well, I've called back today and the same menu option ... everytime, I choose the menu option, a ring, and a "We're sorry, if you like to make a call, please .... etc, etc, etc.."
So as of this post, I'm still trying to contact these people, and will be informing my bank when it opens this morning shortly ...
BOTTOM LINE ... NEVER USE AN ATM MACHINE BUT YOUR OWN...(Or at least a certifiable ATM from a bank).

Absolutely good advice, SF.
Also -- never, ever walk away from the ATM (even your own bank's) until you have your card (although most are the swipe kind now so you don't have to put it in the machine) and your receipt and the screen goes back to the welcome screen.
One time, I walked up to the ATM after the guy in front of me finished and walked away. The screen said, "Would you like another transaction?" with the yes and no options. A dishonest person could have said "Yes" and made a withdrawal against his account. But I gave him a friendly holler and pointed out what he had done. He was pretty grateful.

How frustrating! I would be so angry right now.
Another tip on ATMs, do not deposit cash into an ATM machine. I put $200 cash into my account using the ATM machine. Well, the next day, the bank only credited my account $100. They said there was only $100 in the envelope. I am 100% positive there was $200, but I had no proof. Needless to say, I was out $100. And yes, I closed that account and moved to another bank.

Oh no.. thats awful SF. Both you and MrsChad sound like you have had a nightmare with ATMs.
Well In South Africa, you just dont use ATM's unless they are inside the bank or there is a security gaurd near by, otherwise you are just asking to be mugged or have your card swapped. Happened to me and my mom
they are so fast, bump into you or lean over you and before you look again the card in your hand or pocket does not belong to you... and they have watched you use your pin number at the machine. BYE BYE bank balance.
Hope you get it sorted out SF

I wish you luck, SF. Too bad all ATM machines had no problems, no matter if they are bank ATM or one in a convenience store.
Colin, credit cards and ATM cards are two different things. People charge items on an credit card at a store. ATM cards are used in Automatic Teller Machines to withdraw (take out) money for personal use.
I would like to have a debit card, which I believe you can use for charging things at the store and use in an ATM machine to take out money.
I don't think I will ever be getting a credit card, debit card or checkbook(s).

I too had a similar problem. I bank online so I dont have a local bank. I went to the one i usually use to take out the money but the ATM machine was down. I went a different bank a few blocks down the road and told the machine I wanted $400. I heard the machine counting out the money and after a few minutes, I still heard it. I sat at that machine for almost 10 minutes listening to it counting out money. Finally it spit out my card and said the transaction couldn't be completed. That was a Friday evening around 6 pm. I went to another machine and tried to take out $400 again. I received a slip telling me I had exceeded my daily balance. I figured no big deal...the machine ran out of money. Saturday I went to a different bank and still got a message saying I had exceeded the daily balance. I was not even able to take out $20. I wasn't able to talk to anyone until Monday.
To make a long story short, it took over 2 weeks, $110 in bounced check charges and a $50 late charge from my landlord before it all got straightened out. I was out $160 simply because the ATM was out of money. I despise banks.

SF - I agree that ATM's are a pain in the butt. I hope your situation is completely resolved soon!
There is actually an ATM at my workplace that I occassionally use to withdraw $20 when I need a little cash. So far I have not had problems with it, but I know many people who have stories like yours about ATM's. For any larger monetary transactions, I either use my debit card or I withdraw the money from the bank. And I have never deposited money using an ATM - that just seems too risky to me.
