South Florida Tropical Activity During Off Season?

#1 Postby gatorcane » Mon Nov 12, 2007 10:31 pm

Is it true that extreme southern Florida could see tropical activity year round? I believe sometime in the 1970s South Florida was hit by a tropical storm that developed in the Western Caribbean in the Dec-January timeframe..

I looked on weatherunderground from 1970 thru 1980 and I didn't see any storm listed in that time frame that hit S Florida. I think their was a storm in Feb that hit S FL in the early 1950"s. I found it 1952 formed down in the Western Caribbean on Feb 2nd and moved NE thru S FL. It had a life of 3 days.

boca very interesting. It had winds of 55mph. I guess it is possible South Florida can be hit year round. A 55mph tropical storm sometime before the rainy season picks back up would be nice to help ease the drought here.

I'm thinking there will be no winter system this year.

I'm thinking maybe once a century.
Which since the last one was in 1952; you have a chance for some excitement Chris!!

Of course, I think there is a better chance for the Gators to move up to #2 in the BCS this year with 3 losses than for it to happen.
Or the Canes to play another game in the OB!!! :cheesy: :cheesy:

Dave - if Florida moved to #2 with 3 losses that would be amazing

and if South Florida was hit in the middle of winter from a 55mph tropical storm that would be equally amazing is what you are saying?

we really need some rain here.

The only one in my memory was the April, 1979 unnamed subtropical (or tropical) storm that crossed from Flamingo to Miami with about 6" of rain and gale force winds...

I was driving home from a bicycle club meeting late that evening, and, the wind and rain were very similar to a fairly vigorous tropical storm...

The sun was out the next morning, but it was warm and humid, and, the standing water was proof that it did rain very heavily the night before...

In the late '70s or even 1980, there might have been one or two other subtropical type systems that crossed the area from the south, but, I might be confusing them with pre-frontal troughs that begin the early Spring severe weather season (at least down here) in late January and early February...

Chris,

I did some searching after I read your post. I found that tropical weather events do occur after the official end of Hurricane Season. (Apparently Mother Nature does not subscribe to the same calendar we use.) Although neither storm brushed our area, I spent some time re-tracing the routes of 2003's Tropical Storms Odette and Peter. Throughout my research I could not find mention of many tropical storms that passed through our area after the season ended.

Frankly, using my brief research as a guide, I'd have to conclude that it is unlikely that a tropical weather event might spring up and pass over South Florida this year.

I agree that we need some rain. It would be great if we could get it. It doesn't look like the tropics will provide the relief we need.

This is not to say that it cannot happen. Anything can happen anytime. That's what makes life so interesting. Several years ago, I witnessed snow flurries on Christmas Eve in BOCA RATON. I still have a hard time convincing people that snow fell here. But it did….I walked my dog through a haze of snow flurries. He hated it.

And who knows, the Dolphins might win a football game this year.

Good image, Hurakan. But keep in mind, every landfalling storm you see made landfall in May or November, with the exception of the February storm (which is questionable). No december landfalls have been recorded in the United States. I believe there is only one landfalling late season storm on that map, the 1925 Tampa hurricane. It hit Florida in extreme late November, and became a category two off the coast of North Carolina in early Dec.

Technically, Nicole 98 holds the record for the storngest Dec hurricane, with Epsilon about a millibar behind it. But I believe if that storm had any pressure measurements near its peak, it would be declared the strongest December storm in history.
