Yes the government has already deployed aid workers and the newspaper is saying that all the shelters has been opened since last night as people started to come in. Only some fishermen and their boats have not reached to the safty yet and the number is more than 100+.

Oh yes, but the winds play a big role here too . . . as the core/RFQ should be coming ashore in SW Bangladesh (i.e. Sundarbans Mangrove Forest), the winds will play a large role there in potentially knocking down those trees. The more trees that get knocked down, the more prone to flooding and erosion that area will be. And, as mentioned much earlier in the thread, the Sundarbans is home to about 4 million people . . . not much in comparison to the rest of the country, but still a VERY large number to have in the path of a high-end Cat 4 at landfall.

Re: Bay of Bengal: Very Severe Cyclonic Storm SIDR 0709
I live in the coastal area of Bangladesh, however my place does not fall directly in the path of the storm.
Around 40000 work force is working to alert people and move them to shelter. What I am afraid is that, there had been few number 10 great danger signal on cyclones that did not do much damage in last couple of years. So, a lot people will take the storm a bit reluctantly in spite of all the effort by the administration.
I am also afraid, still today, broadcast and print media is treating this storm as another great big storm. The sense of alarm and urgency is still absent in the body language.
As per the projected path, sidr looks like going over sundarbans which is the least populated area of bangladesh but the first picture of the day looked really scary. With such enormous size even if its going over sundarban its gonna hit, areas like vola, shondeep and other islands. And, the surge will be catastrophe.
The people in the coastal part of our country are very resilient. Communications has improved, affluent people afford TV-internet-radio, lives in brick built houses and a lot of shelters were built after 91.
So, with the time we have got, there is always room for one to be moved to a safe place.
I just hope and pray the media, administration and the people realize it is just not another storm and few more lives can be saved.
Let Almighty be merciful.

FromBD, Kd_Black, and all other posters living in or having family in the vicinity of this storm:
You are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope things turn out all right for you and your families. As dire as this situation is, people will find a way to survive. Like you said, the people are resilient.
Bangladesh may get devastated by Sidr, but it will not be destroyed.
Stay safe and good luck.

Thanks to all of you for your concern. I feel moved.
Around .6 million people have been evacuated to higher land by government in cyclone shelters and schools and colleges.
Through mike(loud speaker) announcement has been made in remotest areas.Hope people are listening.
Media report suggests, some 100 fisherman went to fishing amidst this condition, stating the sea is not rough yet.
Sundarban fishermans and bawalis has also been warned and moved to storm shelter as per media report.
This would be a true test of this countries ability to face such storm.
Here in Chittagong, there is not much wind and its drizzling. Saw in news that in coxsbazar, khulna the weather has gone rough.
National news is saying, the storms gonna hit today at 1800 hours to 2100 hours. With GMT+6 time difference which is 9 hours earlier than the prediction made here.
Maybe authorities bring it forward so that, people comes earlier in the shelter.
The destruction is inevitable, hope lives are saved.
Rest on almighty.

Along the Bangladeshi coast east of the border. However the exact point of landfall is not important, as the size of the storm means that almost the whole country will feel the force of this storm.

Finding information on past cyclonic storms is not easy. If you want the best track data you would have to write to an address in India I was told by the IMD.
Here, I found this:
Data Rescue/ India
Scroll down to part C for information on past cyclones. However, the info is in PDF files.
