Who Pays Da Bills?

#1 Postby azskyman » Tue Jul 01, 2003 8:15 pm

In our 32 years of marriage, Kathy and I have switched back and forth from one paying the bills to the other paying the bills. I don't mean paying FOR the bills, because anyone with a spouse or significant other knows that his money is her money and her money is her money.

But for the last 7 years, I pay the bills pretty religiously once a week on Thursday or Friday evenings. She balances what's left of the checkbook after I'm done with it.

Who pays da bills in your household?

Marty pays da bills (LOL!) from our account. I take care of my own separate bills though. :D

My mother pays the bills for the three of us. I will most likely not having any personal bills and will never have to pay the bills for anyone.

Me being the accountant. I pay the bills and balance the checkbook. Sometimes its a burden that I wish I didn't have to do....

Here's another question to Azskyman's question - who on here lives paycheck to paycheck?

I know we do - pay these bills with this check and those bills with that check. Can't get out of the rut.

Just curious if other's have this same scenario in their lives?

I do the personnal bills AND the business end of it, Michelle does the billing, invoicing for the business, it's a GREAT partnership we have (in more ways than one!)

As far as living from paycheck to paycheck, the Good Lord has Blessed us SO well, I can't even begin to tell you how TRULY blessed we are. I won't give the exact amount, too personnal, but our billing, invoicing hits 6 digits, that's why we are looking for more write offs.........IN FACT...we *might* be starting a new business that we operate under the established business, well....it's a long story.

My mom and step-dad lived paycheck to paycheck! There were months that it was a pain in the butt, but it had to be done. My brother and I learned the value to budgeting our money.

As for paying the bills....its me, myself and I.

We have a budget...all items are accounted for...and to the extent that we have all the money assigned (even if it is to travel, etc), we live paycheck to paycheck. For the first time in our lives, starting today we are both on salary!

The good news...we know exactly what our checks will be every single time.

The bad news...our employers are both going to get more than their money's worth when we work some 50 or 60 hour weeks!

Anyone ever look at their check and say, "Now that would be a great check if I got it EVERY week!"

Dennis, you are blessed indeed. You've earned it I'm sure.

my wife controls the money...pays the bills and I like it that way. That doesn't mean I never have money in my pocket because I always have 20 or 30 dollars. We pay for everything with a check or a checkcard. Purchases are always discussed between us, and my response is always the same. "You tell me? I don't know if we have $10 in the checking account, or $5000!"

Life is simple for me.....now for her....she is stressed! .... but she is far more organized then I ever could be.

Sorry, I didn't mean for that last post to sound like a self centered, bragging post, I'm not saying we don't live paycheck to paycheck, during the winter, when business drops off, the cash flow slows a bit, we have most of our income tied up in mutual funds and other investments that cannot be touched without paying a huge penalty. So yes......I guess you could say we live paycheck to paycheck, our paydays are once a month, sometimes 45 days, makes it a challenge that's for sure!

Dennis,

You are your own boss and manage your money well - I am right now searching the webs and everything else I can get my hands on to get my family on a budget and get a nest-egg built up. I am trying several ventures on the side as businesses. You paid your dues as a meatcutter and now have a successful business where you are your own boss and you make your own paycheck. The same for azskyman. One day I will find the right budget - plan or whatever and not live paycheck from paycheck.

I didn't take it that way either Dennis!

Fortunately, I don't live paycheck to paycheck. I can (and do) squirrel $$$ away for that rainy day and retirement.

Actually - I'm an accountant too. I get so tired of counting other people's money that I don't reconcile my checkbook for 2 - 3 months at a time! :o

Thank goodness for internet banking!

Amen to that Stephanie - I log on each day and check my balance. I know how much we have - its just when the hubby writes checks and doesn't tell me about them until they have cleared the bank.

:-(

I crunch enough numbers for 8 to 10 hours a day for everyone else.

I do most of the bill-paying, although my wife will occassionally write the checks for a few bills. As for living paycheck-to-paycheck, it is a way of life.

I'm always the one who can't wait to get to the mailbox....I'm still expecting that surprise check to arrive any day!

I keep finances on an Excel spreadsheet and like Stephanie...check online balances quite often. If I were to find a mistake where I have less than I thought, I'd get in touch with the bank.

If I found a mistake where I had MORE than I thought I should, I'd hold my breath!
