Sesame Street - Early Sesame Street Deemed Unfit For Today's

#1 Postby Ptarmigan » Mon Nov 19, 2007 8:39 pm

I remember early Garfield comics in which Jon smoked a pipe. Also, I remember when I was a kid I had a Mr. Potato Head and he had a pipe. No one does that anymore. I miss the old Cookie Monster. Lot of things back then would be politically incorrect. Hell, Tom and Jerry is violent even by today's standards.

Even in the late 1980s to early 1990s, I remember seing a character in Sesame Street smoke a pipe. Who really smokes a pipe today? I don't like smoking, but there are other worse things I've seen on TV. Didn't known Mr. Rogers was a Navy Seal. He was also a reverend. Yes, I agree that today's cartoons are not that great.

What? I'm sorry, but give me a break. I saw smoking characters all the time as a kid, and I've never smoked. I watched Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes religiously and never wanted to do any of that stuff. Neither did my friends. We knew the difference between fantasy and reality. Kids are going to see people in the real world smoking anyway. We don't need to censor every last thing to ribbons -- in fact, if we always portray a happy world full of happy characters who never do wrong, they're going to get a very unrealistic expectation of the real world, which is a morally gray place at best.

Kids are impressionable, but it's the parents' responsibility to explain that smoking is a bad habit and they shouldn't try to imitate everything they see on television. This kind of censorship and dumbing down of children's programming just makes it easier to sit kids down in front of some sugary, mind-numbing schlock all day instead of actually parenting them and teaching them right from wrong.

They say the classic cartoons are unfit for kids, yet they have no problem with:

- Characters on "South Park" (Bleep)in' this and (Bleep)in' that.
- Characters on "Boondocks" TV show using the 'N' word in almost every sentence.
- Animated Nudity.
- :18: on "Drawn Together".
- Blood and Gore, eventhough they're drawn on paper.

Now tell me: WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT PICTURE?!?!

To be fair, we're talking about children's shows here, and all of the cartoons you mentioned are directed at adults, so it's not really a fair comparison. Children's programming is what's being watered down into mind-rotting BS, and it's a show that was directed at children that's coming under scrutiny here for a silly reason. I'm not saying any of this is okay, just that you're looking at the wrong shows for examples of what's happening to children's TV.

Your point would be better illustrated by looking at all of the lame, cheap-o japanese toy commercial cartoons they import and dub over with english dialogue, most of which are ridiculously inane, or violent, or both
