145.4 km (90.4 miles)

It was a very deep quake, thus less damage for a 7.3 quake is expected.Hopefully,no tragic nerws comes out of Martinique or vicinity islands.

6 reports from Castieres in St. Lucia indicate moderate/severe shaking and moderate damage. still no news. it's on the shake map (if you roll your mouse over the islands, it gives you what's reported.)

Report from Barbados

From: "Gillian Jordan" <gillian.jordan at bb.rbtt.com>
Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 16:00:30 -0400

From Gillian Jordan, Barbados

Scary moments here high up in St. Thomas Barbados – my house was shaking like a ship – it was hard to tell when it had stopped. Afterwards, when I was sure, I looked out and my pool had mini tidal waves that swept over the deck absolutely soaking it. Reports range from effects so far down to Trinidad and a possible second hit there, up to Tortola. Cell phones are down. Hoping no major damage given the amount of caves underground in Barbados. It lasted about 30 - 45 seconds I think – I estimate that only because I was on the phone, hung up and managed to get my three big dogs (not easy) into a cupboard under the stairs (with a sturdy doorway). So it was not a couple of seconds, that’s for sure. Any words on after shocks – jeez I have only read about this before! Hope all are OK.

Report from St Marteen

Earthquake - strongly felt - preliminary reports of minor damage
From: "Roddy Heyliger" <roddyheyliger at gmail.com>
Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 16:02:14 -0400

After 3.00pm a strong earthquake was felt and lasted for a number of
seconds. The local fire department says they have been receiving some
reports of minor damage here and there.
Apparently the quake measured 7.3 and was between Dominica and Martinique.
Otherwise, everything is fine on the Friendly Island.

I wonder if Pelee, the volcano (and notice similarity to the name of the Hawaiian volcano goddess) is going to get active in the near future.

(From Mount-Pelee.com)

Mount Pelee towers above the island of Martinique, in the West Indies. Since 1902, it is one of the most famous volcanoes on Earth ; its eruption led to the destruction of the entire city of Saint-Pierre, with its 28,000 inhabitants.

the depth of the earthquake means it was felt over a very large area. I'm reading reports it was felt strongly in Venezuela and Guyana, South America!

UNCONFIRMED from BBC: building collaspes in Martinique

TV report here is saying that initial reports from Martinique are of collapsed buildings but no more information was available.

More quakes reported but much less strong.

I see there have been at least 2 other aftershocks so far. Strongest ever recorded in Caribbean history? I'm not sure on that.
