Strong Earthquake in Caribbean (7.4) No Tsunami

Re: Strong Earthquake in Caribbean (7.4) No Tsunami
We felt it very strongly here in St. Maarten.
There was a strong rumbling that started and then things started shaking and it went on and on and on.
I don't think it was the strongest tremor we ever felt here but it probably was the loudest and the longest.
People ran out of buildings here because they were terrified. So far there are only reports of minor damages here.
French news reports say some buildings collapsed (including a bank building) in Martinique, but no casualties known so far nor people injured.
It was very scary.
I think the entire Caribbean even as far as South America felt it.

Report from St Thomas
From: "Jane Higgins" <jhigginswear at islands.vi>
Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 16:48:45 -0400
My husband the airplane mechanic said that their hangar at Cyril King Airport in St Thomas was wiggling and dancing ;
everyone came out of the offices to see when it might stop. He claims it was the longest and strongest
earthquake he has experienced; and we have allot of little rumbles all the time. I was on the road home
and drove up to a house of dogs acting anxious, and one in particular up on the bed where she never goes;
they flew out of the house the moment I opened the doors.
We are hoping the trembles pushed the cracks in the pool back together from the last one that caused the tiny
leak....oh to be so lucky. Please give us any updates of aftershocks.

A friend of mine here who is French is checking French new sites and blogs. He says there are reports of supermarket roof collapses, phone lines damaged and some interrupted (same for electricity), no phones at Fort de France, lot of buildings with crack in their wall, some buildings collapsed in the center of Fort de France, people panicked and still panicking (sp), some people fainted or passed out apparently, everybody is trying to get back home but roads are blocked and a lot of traffic jam, apparently no victims though. and lots of confusion.
and I see from the USGS site, that there have been 2 strong after shocks of 4.8 and 5.0 in the same area.

Here in Guadeloupe, the shock was strongly felt!!!At this time,no report of injuries or dead. In Martinica i got confirmation of part of a bulding collapse at Fort de France but no injuries in that location; some people injured.
It appears that the depth of the quake escape our countries of a real desaster.....Stayed tuned

Read this. This is amazing!
This earthquake confused the computers at USGS and triggered a series of false quake alarms in California, with computers picking up energy coming out of the Caribbean and erroneously treating it as local seismic activity. The fake quakes began registering nine minutes after the Caribbean quake, USGS scientists said.

I dont think that we have members at Dominica and Martinque. The most closest islands from the earthquake epicenter that members of storm2k live are in Guadeluope and Barbados.

St. Lucia Report
This is Chef Bobo reporting from St Lucia.
Yes, we had a very strong tremble today. I was shopping just when the quake started. It was a long quake, 30-40 seconds and items were falling off the shelves in the supermarket.(that's when I was running out on the street my self!!) Some buildings in central Castries got cracks and reports say that specifically Chireki Building got a good bit of cracks. No reports of fallen buildings or poles. All telephone and electricity is working just fine. We all got really scared but it is calm and under control.

Report from Grenada
From: "Wild in Grenada" <Chris at wildingrenada.com>
Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 18:08:54 -0400
Hi folks,
Well that was my first experience of a quake. I believe the slow rocking motion was due the the depth of the epicentre (90 miles).
Having been working hard, I thought I would sit for a while. When I first felt the mopement I thought it was me. Then the security grills started rattlng. The strangest thing was the sound of sploshing water coming from the water tank, followed by it overflowing!
The movement here in Grenada was a kind of gentle rocking, nothing violent. Just imagine the energy required to move all these islands by that amount!
Glad to hear all seems OK around the islands, only slight damage.

CNN Chad Myers reported that false quake reading "6.0" reading in Northern California, then he retracted it a few minutes later.

Report from Martinique
Earthquake in Martinique
From: "Jacques PERMAL" <jacques.permal at numericable.fr>
Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 01:48:33 +0100
I've just watched TV MARTINIQUE.
Damages are important but global situation is not critical.
Capital FORT-DE-FRANCE is in state shock because of debris on the roads. Most important street (Rue SCHOELCHER) has been closed by authorities in order to ease cleaning operations.
North of island has been most affected. A unhabitant has been very injured while trying to escape through windows in LORRAIN (North-Atlantic coast).
TRINTE's hospital has been closed because of severe damages.
Schools will be closed tomorrow in order to monitor concrete structures.
In Guadeloupe there were a lot of sikness. Some people have been hospitalized.
Schools will be closed tomorrow.
