Wow, this is stupid. The forecasters say that there is always a chance of error. These guys only care about money and should earn their own degree in meteorology and see how hard it is before suing Gray.

I KNEW it! THIS IS WHAT I SAID WOULD HAPPEN THAT SHOULDN'T HAPPEN BECAUSE IT'S A LOAD OF BULL!
Sorry for yelling, but it really ticks me off when these people probably don't even know what they're talking about. If they knew their case was futile yet still went ahead with it, that would at least be somewhat respectable.

Yes, I agree it's goofy, but, again, again, again - that's another reason why our NHC/HRD Directors of the early '80s were not in favor of starting these seasonal forecasts, since it definitely would create a "cry wolf" situation if they didn't go as planned.
Unfortunately, against some NHC forecaster's better instincts, they also felt compelled to begin issuing these long-long term forecasts - you can bet this man isn't the only one grumbling - and will likely not listen to future "busy season ahead" statements...
Personally, I wish TWC would also stop that dumb "It Could Happen Tomorrow" series - sure, my Aunt Tillie could grow a mustach tomorrow, but, it's not likely to happen...
Some at TWC and CSU need to read the Bible verse that says:
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:34)
P.S. My own 2 cents on the whole issue - seasonal forecasts should be suspended until more accuracy is gained (perhaps they can be issued internally (for now) for experimental purposes, but, that's all)...

Well exactly.
This lawsuit is going no-where.

Dumb: Forecasters trying to predict entire Hurricanes seasons months in advance.
Dumber: Trying to sue them for it.
This is an all timer.

If it stops the ridiculous forecasts and the media hype prior to every season, then good. Of course, they need to include all the media in their lawsuit...

What I suggest is that, for a public release, the forecast will be either above average or below average, with no degree of intensity. That way, the people have no idea what exactly to predict. It could be a prediction for 11 named storms or 20 named storms. That the lawsuit will quickly fail is anyone's best guess.

Re: Hotel Owner plans Lawsuit Against Hurricane Forecasters
There are certainly no grounds for suing them, geez! The forecasters always mention that what they are doing is not an exact science. Personally, I think the problem is that the public picks out certain parts of the forecasts that are made and hear what they want to hear. They hear "higher than normal activity" and "greater chance for a major landfalling hurricane in the U.S." Then again, the media puts a strong emphasis on this too, so they are to blame as well. The facts are they are predictions, not written guarantees.
As most of us on here know, predicting where these storms will go is tricky business beyond a few days, let alone a few months or more.
I agree with an above average, average, or below average prediction each year without mentioning probabilities of landfalling storms for the Carribean, U.S. East /Gulf Coast etc. The number of storms were really pretty close to what they thought they would be this past year.

I happened to see a CNN Headlines News item early this morning about this story, and, there was a mention about the possibility of this kind of forecast not being allowed in the future - after I turned off the television, what came to my mind, interestingly enough, was perhaps this (the lawsuit) was God's permitting way of ending this practice, which only puts anxiety, fear and dread into the hearts of millions each Springtime...
As someone on this board mentioned a few months ago, "disaster forecasting" seems to be the trend of the 21st Century, but, again, it only serves to frighten people - often for no reason...
I say this with all due respect to the folks at NOAA and elsewhere, but, while they have always been good in tracking what's on the map, perhaps it's time to end this practice of trying to predict the weather many months in advance - again, as the Bible says, today has enough troubles of it's own...

First, God has nothing to do with this. Second, according to the 1st Amendment, they have all the right to release these forecasts because they directly or indirectly don't harm anyone. Third and final, anyone that fears "anxiety, fear and dread" becuase of these forecasts should get a little more educated and realize that they are mere forecasts and not reality. Please, lets stop bashing these forecasts. If you don't want them, just don't read them. WHAT ABOUT THAT!!!

Has anyone noticed that the fire-in-a-crowded-theater hypothetical is severely flawed not because of the intent of the speaker but because of the interpretation of the message? It applies here too.

Florida in the Bull’s Eye this Hurricane Season
"We’re in for a Rough Year," Says AccuWeather.com’s Bastardi
Joe Bastardi 2007 Hurricane Forecast
STATE COLLEGE, PA, May 8, 2007 - AccuWeather.com Chief Hurricane Forecaster Joe Bastardi and his team expect this season’s hurricanes and tropical storms to pose a far greater threat to lives and property than last year’s, with significantly more storms striking the US.
In the AccuWeather.com 2007 Hurricane Season Forecast released today, Bastardi warns that six or seven storms will strike the US coast. This includes the possibility of multiple strikes by the same storm, such as the way Hurricanes Andrew and Katrina – both extreme examples – struck Florida before later striking the US Gulf Coast. The majority of these landfalls are projected for the Gulf Coast from the mouth of the Mississippi River to Cape Hatteras, NC, with the center of the bull’s eye on Florida.
AccuWeather.com forecasts 13 or 14 total storms in the Atlantic Basin, with three or more likely to be major hurricanes of Category 3 or greater.

That initial private-weather-company-that-shall-not-be named forecast got a TON of media play.
In fact, on other (non-weather) bulletin boards, I've REPEATEDLY seen either NOAA or Gray get blamed for forecasts that actually were from the private-weather-company-that-shall-not-be-named; so they get to bash NWS, and then have NWS get the heat for their own bad forecasts. Amazing.

Bastardi's forecast was very bold. In truth they should stop with the preseason forecasts,
