Rare Hurricane Camille video

#1 Postby hurricanetrack » Fri Dec 07, 2007 5:37 pm

I have obtained a copy of a rare hurricane Camille documentary. It is titled "A Lady Called Camille". I saw this when I was a kid living in North Carolina. They would show it during hurricane awareness week at the local aquarium. I always thought it was scary and cool at the same time.

Notice how similar things are with Camille as they were with Katrina. I mean really, watch it closely and take note of how little things have changed in 35 years in terms of how we handle hurricanes.

The damage video too is incredible. You could take any of the fly-over footage of Katrina damage and make it look 8mm film and voila! It would look like Camille damage. The similarities are striking. Note too that it was heading towards the coast on a Sunday...how eerie is that? Something about Sundays and August hurricanes along the Mississippi and Louisiana coasts.

There is a good line in the video too. Something like "they headed north to New Orleans, for safety". This was after the levee broke at Buras. But then- the levee breaks at the Industrial Canal too. My how things change after 35 years huh? We have to do something about the hurricane problem in this country or Camilles and Katrinas will continue to wreak havoc once per generation. But then again, if it's that infrequent, why bother...that is the way I see some people reacting.

Anyhow, check it out. I posted it on my site for folks to download and watch as needed.

The film is called "A Lady Called Camille", produced by the Civil Defense office. It's shown on the Gulf Coast regularly before the start of the hurricane season. Or, at least it was before Katrina. You can read a bit about it here.

By the way, it looks like they used some canned footage in that video. Note the profile of the waves they show as they talk about the massive storm surge moving into the MS coast (and in the closing credits). Those aren't Gulf of Mexico waves. And at 11:34 into the video as they talk about Camille moving into the eastern U.S. they show the standard lightning flash that you've seen in many old scary movies.

This video on Camille has been shown on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for years, at the start of hurricane season. I can remember Civil Defense classes in elementary school where they also showed us this film. This past summer, the Mississippi ETV channel stated that this filmed would be retired and that new films on Katrina would be used to warn residents of the catastrophic damage hurricanes are capable of doing to communities. Before its final broadcast, I set up my VCR and began taping it. I had purchased the video from the Seafood Museum in Biloxi during hurricane season 2004. Of course, my original film as well as the Seafood Museum where it was purchased, were lost in Katrina.

Prior to my rocket testing days I taught school in Biloxi (Science) and showed that film every year to my students... As wxmn57 said in his post there were some canned weather footed inserted into the film for effects..... got to remember that Camille did not destroy either the bay st louis nor the biloxi bridges.... Katrina pulverized them totally.... Katrina destroyed so it many more house and businesses than Camille along the MS coast it pales in comparison...

For the people along the MS gulf coast Camille has always been the standard of which we judged hurricanes... Until Katrina, now that standard has changed forever ...
