This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Opinion: Hurricane Season should last until December 15th.

#1 Postby Category 5 » Mon Dec 10, 2007 10:26 pm

Considering what has been happening since 2001. With storms forming in or lasting ways into December. I think this is something that should be considered. There is no doubt in my mind that many December storms have been missed pre 2001. Active storms in December have become seemingly routine.

Thoughts?

I'd say move it up to May 15th, but not to Dec. 15th, because of the relatively low numbers.

There is no need to change anything in the Atlantic. Maybe the EPAC the season should be between May 15 through Nov. 15.

One season of low numbers a shorter season does not make, HURAKAN. Last season, Sergio dissipated only on November 20 and formed on November 14. Last season's Atlantic season had low numbers, but that does not warrant saying we should bring the end of the Atlantic season forward.

Likewise, December storms are not the norm, they are an exception. No need to change what is quite arbitrary anyway. Mother Nature will churn out storms as and when she wants to, whatever date limits we put on them are useless.

Why not just dump the dates and declare the season as year-round?

:uarrow: Because that would be like declaring that damaging cyclones are likely to happen at any time, which they are not. I would not advise changing the season at all unless this period of high activity is not temporary (which is unlikely).

well, sinc 1998 there have been 8 storms thatg have formed in or lasted into December. Only Zeta was after Dec 15. It may be appropriate if this trend continues for a few more years for the scientific community to debate the issue of extending the season

I agree Derek. And I think yes it would make sense to extend the season
to dec. 15th. In 1925 there was a category 2 storm that impacted FL in
december (wunderground.com: see section on december storms in masters blog)

I doubt the season will extend to December 15.

Well, that storm formed and made landfall in November as a tropical strom, but didn't impact land in December, granted it was a category two by then.

I've always liked that Idea, however, that just isn't going to happen.
