Yeah, there's been accidents out in the Ft. Worth area due to icing on the overpasses and bridges. On my side of town, it's above freezing. CaptinCrunch may have experienced this since he lives out near Ft. Worth.

What a mess this morning, HEAVY fog, vis about 25 feet in some spots, and to top it off the bridges had a thin layer of ice on them making it a driving hell heading into work. It normaly takes me about 20min to get to work (18 miles), this morning it took 1hr 10min to get in. Had to wait for sand trucks on 2 overpasses, several wreaks due to icy spots and the fog, and just plain old slow driving people.

Ft Worth police had over 125 minor wreaks reported this morning due to icy bridges, and patchy ice on side roads.

However it was nice to wake up to a very frosty (icy) morning, lawns, cars, and roof tops looked as if it had snowed. :ggreen:

The 18z GFS continues to show quite a push of cold air (and wintry weather) arriving right around Christmas...

Arctic blasts rips into Texas during the morning of Christmas Eve - http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/gfs/18/images/gfs_ten_252l.gif

Christmas Eve afternoon looks brutal! The winds are howling and surface temperatures are falling into the 30s for SE Texas and below freezing in north Texas. With upper level temperatures below freezing all the way to the coast, the cold rain overhead would begin to mix with and even transition over into sleet and snow across SE Texas and would become all snow/sleet for north Texas - http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/gfs/18/images/gfs_ten_264l.gif

By midnight Christmas morning, most of the state (especially north of I-10) is near or below freezing with light snow beginning to taper off. It is likely that some snow accumulation would have built up across portions of the state before the storm ended - http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/gfs/18/images/gfs_ten_276l.gif

Christmas afternoon features highs only in the 30s and 40s much of Texas with clearing skies - http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/gfs/18/images/gfs_ten_288l.gif

250+ hours out? I would love to see that happen but I wouldn't hold my breathe right now.

Oh, and I completely agree. I am definitely not getting my hopes up until I see this within the 180 hour range..and even then I will still be skeptical. It is still pretty interesting to see this trend of a strong front "around" Christmas continue though. This trend of an arctic front sometime between the 23rd and 27th has been going on for the past few days and hopefully that means it will have some form of validity in the end.

The 00z GFS no longer shows a significant winter storm on Christmas eve/Christmas morning. However, it does continue to show a strong front and a cold airmass working into the area for Christmas eve and Christmas day with chilly daytime highs and cold overnight lows. Overall, for being well over a week away, I would say that the trend in the long-range modeling continues to be good this evening for those wanting a chilly Christmastime. Let's just hope that this trend continues through the next several days so that we can all gain more confidence in this all playing out.

Looking more interesting this weekend:

HIGH PRESSURE BEGINS TO MOVE INTO SE TX SATURDAY NIGHT. PROVIDED
THE WINDS DROP OFF ENOUGH...THE NRN ZONES SHOULD SEE A LIGHT
FREEZE. HOWEVER...WINDS WILL STAY UP AROUND 10 MPH OVER HOUSTON
METRO AND POINTS SOUTH WHICH WOULD KEEP TEMPS A FEW DEGREES ABOVE
FREEZING. ON SUNDAY NIGHT...HIGH SETTLES RIGHT OVERHEAD...PROVIDING
MORE FAVORABLE RADIATIONAL COOLING. THIS WILL LIKELY BE THE COLDEST
NIGHT IN MOST AREAS...WITH A LIGHT FREEZE POSSIBLE IN HOUSTON.

TEMPS MODERATE QUICKLY TO NEAR NORMAL LEVELS BY TUESDAY AS SFC
HIGH PUSHES EAST AND ONSHORE FLOW RETURNS. HAVE KEPT 20/30 POPS IN
FCST LATE TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY WARM ADVECTION DEVELOPS AND PWS
INCREASE BACK TO 1.1-1.3 INCHES. BOTH GFS/ECMWF SHOW A SHORTWAVE
AND ASSOCIATED FRONT CROSSING CWA LATE THURSDAY.

So, I suppose I should pack the winter gear since I'm heading to Houston on Christmas morning. I hope that the roads are opened at that time. Is any of this cold going to spill over into Louisiana?

Hopefully the GFS is onto another Christmas gift for us down south like in 2004. Remember the long range GFS had a snowstorm only to drop it and then it picked it back up. I'm sure all of us across the GOM will never forget the White Christmas we had. So, if it keeps snowing up in the great plains for the next few weeks perhaps the cold air won't modify quite as much and we can get the cold air down this way needed for the white stuff......MGC

I will never forget. Though it wasn't really all that "white" over here, just having sleet on the ground for Christmas was pretty amazing in Florida. Seems like almost every year recently there has been a storm system on Christmas that has brought down some interesting weather.

The latest Dallas and Fort Worth forecasts are calling for a chance of "drizzle/flurries" this afternoon. So if you live up in north TX, be on the lookout for a few snowflakes!
