This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Anyway, anyone who reads this full thread now should be smart enough to realise it's a joke, but I think in the future it could be made clearer for people who don't understand the cultural reference.

:roflmao:

I didn't believe it, but I forgot about the equivalent to April Fool's Day being around this time.

I think everyone should just lighten up. It's a JOKE. Could it maybe fool some people? Maybe. But those people who get fooled are the ones who judge the whole story on one anecdote and not the full details.

Sandy, that was a good one and I hope these people don't discourage you from creating other great jokes like this.

Don't worry because every Dec. 28 you will get a joke. I usually don't post a joke on April 1st because everyone is already expecting it!!!

A woman should be appointed as the director of the NHC. It is time to put an end to this male dominated "all boys club" at the NHC. I will apply for the job, I'd make a great director. Thanks for your support......MGC

I didn't do anything last year. But in 2005 I posted that Zeta had formed in the central Atlantic and two days later, Zeta formed!!! There was a confusion afterwards if Zeta was a joke or a real storm!!

Now wouldn't it be really weird if the same thing happens here and Gray is appointed Director...sounds like the premise of a goofy comedy!

Dr. Joanne Simpson (wife of former NHC Director Dr. Robert Simpson) was also a senior research meteorologist, and, no doubt "assisted" Bob Simpson during his tenture at the NHC (they often did professionally work as a team, per what I noticed during the one time that I did work for them), so, in a sense, the NHC already has been there...

No offense to HURAKAN, but I had no clue it was "April Fool's" in the Hispanic community and since the thread was by a mod, I believed it after giving it a glance. I didn't click on Full Article because I was in a hurry and didn't have time to read the article or the full thread. Count me as one who thinks it could spread false information quickly, unintentionally, of course.

At first glance I believed it, too - unfortunately, I have to give "credit" for my reaction to the unpredictable world we live in today...

I haven't heard anything as far as the actual selection, but, I'm sure it's on hold until at least sometime in mid-January. I'm sure those responsible are being very careful to consider each applicant being considered (I don't know if any subcommittee interviews are planned prior to the selection), so, it might take a bit longer than what we've seen in the past...

I'm not sure if there is a thread on it--probably removed from the public view, but I do remember being in the chatroom when that happened. I was posting recon data and someone mentioned that a new vortex message was on the message board. Basically, a disgruntled poster and made a fake VDM and posted it on Storm2k. One of the key factors in the VDM was a significant drop in pressure. TWC picked it up within minutes and was reporting it on-air.

Sadly, if one looked at the VDM, they could easily tell it was bogus. The disgruntled poster failed to change the position and date/time group.

:uarrow: I didn't know that TWC would take something from a forum and report it as a fact. Most of the stuff we post here are facts, but there are a lot of opinions that also go back and forth, and I don't think it's a safe procedure to take information from a forum broadcast it to millions of people.

But that's just the point....no one knows what happens once information...true or false, joke or serious..is posted on the Internet. That's why we have a certain responsibility to post accurately. Your post had over 530 views when I sat down to write this response. 530 views during the off season! We have no way of knowing who those viewers are or where they might share the information they read here at Storm2k.

Sandy, I know you thought reporting the "news" that Dr. Gray was now head of the NHC was funny. I didn't. I had no idea that there was a custom to play practical jokes on a day in December and I read the article as a serious piece. In fact, because it was posted by you...a mod here at Storm2k...I believed the article completely.

In the past, when forecasts were written, the posters were asked to add a disclaimer. I think it would have been better if you had included a disclaimer at the end of your article saying something like "Only Kidding" or words to that effect. Your link to full article really wasn't enough for someone who read your post quickly and moved on.

Yes, it's unfortunate but some, especially in media, are irresponsible and will say something before finding out whether it's true or not...

Now, I know that's one of those "Gee, you think?" kind of statements (since the media does report without verifying all the time), but, it's worth repeating, so, as many say - be careful what you post on the Internet - you never know who is reading it...

My first thought about the NHC "story" was, "You're kidding!", so, I did believe that it was true (again, based on the unpredictable world we live in, it seems anything is possible today), so, I'd have to say that this joke wasn't the best idea...

I still have to refer to what happened on TWC during Dean - some fella in Texas posted a comment to their web site that said, "Let's face it, Dean is headed this way", and, incorrectly, TWC broadcast his comment, as a part of the "Let's read some viewer comments on our web site". Well, it seems many only listen to what they want to hear, and, TWC had to quickly back-pedal, saying, "We didn't say that Dean was headed towards Texas!".

There's so much misinformation out there, and, so many that want to voice their opinion, that often the information is picked up by those in media who don't know better (or don't want to know better), and, is believed by those who hear only what they want to hear...

I know the post here was only in jest, but, it was well-written, and, with a link to boot, so, that really was the factor that made me believe it was true - perhaps it was a joke that was too well-made not to look like one...

By the way, I heard that Jim Cantore was selected as the NHC Director...

Kidding (I think)...
