Cold New Orleans...Coach of Ohio State Moves Practice Indoor
Official lows were 28F at the Airport and Audubon Zoo, Uptown, but, several reporting stations in the City had lows of 23F to 29F, with wind chills in the low teens this morning. The coach of Ohio State had a scheduled practice outdoors, but, when he walked out of their hotel this morning, he immediately made a phone call and moved the practice indoors.....LOL. I love how people up North think that we are "warm," year round. The great thing about the South is that it DOES get cold, but, it just doesn't last that long. We are supposed to be close to 70F on Sunday. GO LSU TIGERS!!!

It's not "really" supposed to be that cold at 30N Latitude, which is subtropical and twice as close to the Equator as it is to the North Pole. That's why when cold air doesn't come in, it's 60 or 70F in January which is the winter "norm" for this latitude most elsewhere around the World. Unfortunately (and I speak subjectively because some people may like freezing weather) there are no mountains or water bodies to modify cold air intrusions to the Gulf coast, and even then I'm kind of surprised to see how such a big cold high like we have right now can form over the North American continent, only about the width of Australia, during the winter.
The Lake (Ponchartrain) usually 'helps' New Orleans out during the winter by insulating it from colder air from the North but it was only 3 degrees colder this morning at my residence in Baton Rouge than at NO Lakefront Airport which was 28F, and my high temp was 3 degrees higher. I consider this somewhat unusual.

The coach of Ohio State had a scheduled practice outdoors
Even in New Orleans I'm surprised he did that, especially since cool air is better than hot for athletic activities (at least I think so). Last time we were there in New Orleans it was around the upper 20's so it does get that cold on occasion and several places in LA have even dropped below zero in the past.
Weird.
Anyway, we would never have outdoor practices or games or recesses if they did that. It would be terrible to be cooped up indoors all the time.

I just came from Downtown....there are tens of thousands of Buckeye and Tiger Fans. The city is swarmed. It's like Mardi Gras Downtown. PACKED!!! It looks like everybody is having a blast!!! Unfortunately, I do think that Ohio State will lose tomorrow night. I'm sorry.
