One of the worst ice storms ever recorded took place in Northern New England, northern New York and in parts of eastern Canada (especially eastern Ontario and southern Quebec). It did like $5 billion in damage (plus another $2 billion from other impacts farther south). Many were without power for up to 30 days or more.
The first significant freezing rain took place early on January 5, 1998.

It sure was a memorable one, Even today there are signs of the damage visible in forests all around here and i will try and get some pics of some of the strangly arching birch trees that are found throughout the ottawa area. I was one of the lucky ones as i live in a rural area of eastern ontario but our power was only off for 9 days. The sound of trees crashing in the woods during that storm will stick with me forever and hopefully is somthing i will never hear again.

Yes it was.
At this point, the first round of ice (about 1" to 1.5") had let up and power was out to about 30-50% of the area. But another round was coming...and that is where the disaster happened...

I've certainly gone through my share of ice storms here in Texas but nothing even close to that magnitude.
Geez, I cannot imagine the suffering our Canadian friends went through with that monster storm.
