January 24-31, 2008 Idea: Cold and Generally Dry Nationwide

#1 Postby donsutherland1 » Mon Jan 14, 2008 11:34 am

The latest ensemble guidance and some of the teleconnection indices (most notably the EPO which is progged to be strongly negative for the period in question, a negative PNA, and a neutral NAO) suggest that the January 24-31 timeframe is likely to be cold across much of the nation. The Southeast and Southern Plains will probably wind up as exceptions with the central and southern Texas, the Gulf coast, and Florida winding up somewhat milder than normal.

Unfortunately, with the cold pattern in place, a lack of precipitation could be experienced almost nationwide. There is the possibility of some overrunning snows across the Mid-Atlantic region into perhaps southern New England. The Northern Plains will likely be very dry.

Average Regional Temperature Anomalies:
Northeast: Below normal
Mid-Atlantic: Below normal
Southeast: Near normal
Great Lakes: Much below normal to below normal
Northern Plains: Much below normal
Central Plains: Much below normal
Southern Plains: Somewhat below normal to near normal
Pacific Northwest: Below normal
Southwest/Rest of West Coast: Somewhat below normal to near normal

Best Guess of Regional Temperature Anomalies (°F):
Northeast: -6° to -4°
Mid-Atlantic: -4° to -2°
Southeast: -1° to +1°
Great Lakes: -7° to -5°
Northern Plains: -10° to -8°
Central Plains: -9° to -7°
Southern Plains: -2° to 0°
Pacific Northwest: -3° to -1°
Southwest/Rest of West Coast: -2° to 0°

The 14-day continues to show a very snowy period for the next 12 or so days.
