781 FXUS64 KJAN 240137 AAA AFDJAN AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE JACKSON MS 730 PM CST WED JAN 23 2008 DISCUSSION UPDATE: WINTER WEATHER POTENTIAL FOR AREAS ALONG THE HIGHWAY 82 CORRIDOR INCREASING FOR FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND FRIDAY EVENING...
TWO DIFFERENT CONCERNS THIS EVENING INCLUDE A SLIGHT POTENTIAL FOR WINTER WEATHER TOMORROW MORNING OVER AREAS ALONG AND S OF INTERSTATE 20 AND THEN A GREATER POTENTIAL FOR AREAS ALONG HWY 82 LATER THIS WEEK. LATEST SATELLITE IMAGERY REVEALS A VERY ACTIVE LOOKING SUBTROPICAL STREAM ACROSS THE SRN CONUS EARLY THIS EVENING. PERTURBATIONS IN THIS STREAM WILL COMBINE WITH A COLD POLAR AIRMASS (NOT QUITE ARCTIC IN NATURE) SURGING SWD TO BRING TWO ROUNDS OF PRECIPITATION OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. THE FIRST ROUND OF LIGHT PRECIPITATION IS ON-GOING AND WILL CONTINUE INTO THURSDAY MORNING. WHILE THE GFS CAME IN COLDER WITH COLD ADVECTION TOMORROW MORNING AS PRECIPITATION IS ENDING ALONG AND S OF INTERSTATE 20...THE NAM SHOWS THAT IT WILL BE TOO WARM FOR WINTRY PRECIP. WE WILL KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THIS SCENARIO THIS EVENING...BUT RIGHT NOW FEEL THAT ALL SIGNIFICANT RAIN WILL BE OUT OF THE AREA BEFORE A SWITCH-OVER TO LIGHT SLEET OR LIGHT SNOW CAN TAKE PLACE. DON'T BE SURPRISED THOUGH IF A FEW FLAKES OF SNOW OR SLEET PELLETS SHOW AT PRECIP'S END.

As a side note, usually when they advertise it, nothing happens :)

Hi Tim....I've been watching and wondering myself. We have dropped .8F in the last hour. We're at 33.2F....4:02 PM. Still a cold light rain. I'm told the bridges west of us are ice slick. We're just south of the ice storm warning.

Nothing for us so far. On my way home from work, my car thermometer said it was 39 when I left school and it was 33 when I pulled into my driveway. My family and I went out for dinner and the temp was showing as 32, but no ice accumulations. I think my car therm. is not right.

Personally, I'd rather avoid ice. I like having electricity!

Yeah, I can relate. Electricity is nice. I'll never go without again. Learned my lesson after Katrina. I keep fuel and a Troybilt in our utility room. 36F here this morning. No ice. Light rain continues.

And today it hit 71F in Jackson, MS. Moderate to heavy rain...some lightning. I got to go up I-55 twice today. Wrecks caused by speed on wet pavement. I hate going up into Jackson when it's raining.

I've only driven in Jackson when it's dry. I can only imagine how bad it would be during rain! Traffic is bad enough in Hattiesburg. Give me good ole country roads anyday!
