Feb 5 winter weather in TX Panhandle

#1 Postby wall_cloud » Mon Feb 04, 2008 12:15 pm

we could see near blizzard conditions for the TX Panhandle tonight and early Tuesday. snowfall amounts will probably generally be in the 2 to 4 inch range, but strong winds will reduce visibilities to near zero at times. Just an FYI for you Texans that like to keep an eye on the Lone Star State.

Well I'm always happy to see someone in Texas getting snow.

Looks like here in East Texas we're just going to be in for some good thunderstorms in the morning. Perhaps the seasons are a changing?

Too bad, would have liked to have one more good cold spell. There's always next year.

I got to see freezing drizzle when I was up near Wichita Falls 2 weeks ago.

Last year, down here in HOU, I went to work 2 hours late for freezing drizzle, had small icicles on my gutters, and there was a 10 car wreck on the elevated off-ramp off the Gulf Freeway heading into downtown, and, of course, the 2004 Christmas Eve Miracle, so one year w/o frozen precip won't kill us, it'll only make us appreciate it that much more next year.

I'll bet people in Dalhart don't even appreciate the snow they get.

sort of like the people in SE Texas not appreciating the rainfall. Our reservoirs here are at record lows, average rainfall is less than 20" for most areas and I can't remember the last time I experienced a 70 dewpoint! Its all relative. You want the snow, we just want the moisture.

Ellington Field is reporting a dewpoint of 70ºF, but I'm not sure I trust the ASOS, as Scholes field, Hobby and IAH are in the mid 60s. Still, not shabby for early February.

Well, if you live almost at the 850 mb level, and your dewpoint was near 70ºF, and near surface temps were, say, near 80ºF, your lapse rates/Total Totals would be pretty impressive, and it would start to rain soon, wouldn't it.

I had a summer job in Midland when one of the tropical storms that made landfall in 1995 got that far inland, and the humidity and afternoon showers was very Houston like.

Mr. Cloud, are you going to pop in on the Mardi Gras severe thread, offer your opinions on whether discrete cells may affect DFW before sunrise tomorrow, and then the broader Severe Weather outbreak from the Ohio Valley to the Gulf.

We don't seem to get a lot of pro-met participation on the severe threads.

But I figured, with your nic, you might be interested in that kind of stuff.

I might pop in briefly, but I have to go to work in a bit in focus on the Panhandles.

Hey Cloud: I hope all is well for you in Texas. By the way. Is everything big in Texas? Not blizzards though.
