What do you think about "medicanes"?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

What do you think about "medicanes"?

#1 Postby Pedro Fernández » Fri Feb 08, 2008 1:18 pm

Cyclones developed in the Mediterranean Basin, showing some features similar to tropical cyclones such as wamr core, convective bands surrounding a feature like an eye...

It's very difficult to me to talk about them in English, but I would like to know what do you think about them. Do you think it is possible tropical cyclone development in the Mediterranean Basin? Maybe in the future?

I captured this video from TV news of my country: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYavo4aufUo

I have to admit these systems are very interesting indeed. Of course SST's aren't high enough but I'm thinking would the much colder upper temps that would be present prehaps make up for that and therefore give a system more in the way of tropical features?

I'd guess quite a few of these system do gain at least some subtropical features but they aren't pure tropical features...its an area that could easily be researched even further.

I agree. I have been researching a little bit about this particular kind of mediterranean lows, and I wrote a little paper in Spanish. If somebody want to read it, let me know and I will share it with you.

It would be good if European Meteorological Services put an eye on those systems, making discussions, advises or something similar...

I suspect they would develop very much in the way that the far NE atlantic systems form in late Autumn, indeed if you look at a system like Vince and some of the med systes they do look very similar though the Med systems don't seem to generally last as long, still these systems all develop in what would appear condtions either close or too marginal but equally alot of these systems also develop when upper temps are low and given alot of the med systems develop in winter I can't help but think a similar process is occuring I'd love to see what some of the experts say about these systems, I know Bevin did do something.

Ufff... There is a lot of data in Internet:

http://www.cosmic.ucar.edu/2002Conferen ... YH_6_1.pdf
http://www.cosis.net/members/journals/d ... ?a_id=2292
ftp://texmex.mit.edu/pub/emanuel/PAPERS ... l_2007.pdf

And, in Spanish:

http://www.meteored.com/ram/numero35/ciclon-vince.asp
http://www.meteored.com/ram/numero36/ciclon-vince.asp
In those, I am one of the authors.

http://www.meteored.com/ram/?p=84

And, in our website/forum:

http://www.cazatormentas.net/foro/index ... ic=11069.0

Anyway, I think the biggest experts on tropical cyclones are from USA (lot of years monitoring them and developing technology for researching them)... This is the reason I'm asking here

I think cyclones will happen in the Mediterranean eventually. I'm sure they've happened in the past, and history will repeat itself.

some of those cyclones are likely at least subtropical, if not fully tropical as Vince was

What I find interesting is that the two medi-canes mentioned occurred in winter..(January and March)

The first looks oddly similar to a North Atlantic Hurricane. The Halloween Storm of 1991, which as the ULL weakened, it produced the Unnamed Hurricane of 1991 inside of it. 980 millibar pressure and 65 knot sustained winds.

I don't think they're 'canes. I don't rightly know what they are. But they're certainly, in some way, very similar to TCs, and they happen literally every year. I'd advise putting research into it.

Thanks for your replies

I didn't know it, but Mediterranean Cyclones are being researched by an European Proyect called MEDEX. This proyect group several european Weather Institutions. I haven't got much data about that, but it seems very interesting.
