I briefly dated a cute girl named Laura in college. She was a nice, if slightly weird, person, but she got really sppoky when drinking.


Driving back from a Super Bowl party near Lake Travis, my car was ill, in her car, on the hilly and winding roads outside Austin, and she says "Ed, ever wonder what it would be like to just drive straight and off these hills?".



She was really cute, and she was in one of my classes, but I never called her for a date again.

I'll tell you which storms might be duds. Lately the replacement names have been having a rough time. Floyd and Lenny were monsters in 1999, replaced by puny Lee and forgettable Franklin. Allison, Iris, and Michelle were all replaced by weak storms Andrea, Ingrid, and Melissa. So Isidore's and Lilly's replacements, Ike and Laura, will probably be 40 mpg tropical storms.

If that's your forecast, it has a very high bust probability. I would expect peak activity to start later, especially if La Nina fosters more long-tracked systems in a typical "late blooming" season.

It's definitely amusing to watch your "2004-2005" forecasts over the past few seasons. Do you realize that 2004 and 2005 featured 16 tropical cyclone impacts in the United States, including more than +10 direct landfalls? That is unprecedented; only 1886 comes close to those standards. 10 hurricanes and seven major hurricanes is astounding for a two-year period.

Gustav, Marco, Omar, and Paloma I have a feeling will be the big ones this year. Now in locations, Gustav might be a Florida storm, but I have a feeling Marco will hit the Carolinas

Remember, Laura would not be used for the first time in the Atlantic. It was used once back in 1971.

Well, to be fair, Alex was a fluke. Charley intensified hours off-shore while being enhanced by a late season front, and frances was a typical CV storm, peaking in early September. Alex is the only one that may qualify as "early", depening on how you look at it, I guess.

Alex was NOT a fluke. It developed into a depression on the last day of July and was named the next day. It unexpectedly became a C2 as it brushed North Carolina and a C3 at one point on its way out to sea.

The Carolinas were also hit more than people realize in 2004. Alex, Charley, and Gaston ALL had effects on that area. It's only forgotten because of what happened in Florida that year.

Back to the topic. Which names will be big in 2008?

Bertha IMO won't be big but it'll be one of those slow Caribbean crawlers that dump huge rains on areas that don't handle it too well.

Fay will be fairly strong hurricanes as will both Hanna and Ike which will both be majors...Gustav will IMO also be a major as well but will stay well out to sea (think Karl 04). Marco could be fairly dangrous as well getting upto cat-3, late season Caribbean/florida/east coast threat.
