Interstate & U.S. Highways through your area

#1 Postby ColdFront77 » Thu Jul 03, 2003 4:14 pm

This should be fun. Let's see how this thread goes. :D

I enjoy following Interstate and U.S. Highways through the United States. I am not sure if you would call this a hobby, but it is fun to do, nonetheless. :)

I live just off of U.S. 27/441 in central Florida. U.S. 301 is right down the road and it crosses I-75.

In Massachusetts, I lived off of Route 24, which isn't a U.S. or Interstate Highway, but a very heavily travelled highway in southeastern Massachusetts. It goes from several miles south-southwest of Boston, MA (considered directly to Boston, (of course) to Fall River, MA. Route 24 splits into I-93 N (which actually goes east... to gradually north toward and through Boston.

I see U.S. 27 goes through Cincinnati, Ohio, where fellow member Mary (Miss Mary) lives.

What Interstate and U.S. Highways go through your area now and which did go through your area if you lived someplace else? In turn we will see which Storm2K members live off of the same highway.

It will be more interesting to see which U.S. routes go through each others locations than Interstate routes.

Well, I grew up not too far from US 301, and not far from I-95 just out side of DC.

When I moved to Boston, I lived not too far from I-95, and 93.

Now I live in NY and there is I-87 and 90.

Nice topic. The only interstate I live by is I-10.

I'm 54 miles south of I-40, take hiway 77 south to hiway 260, head east of the US 260-60 junction, I'm 3 miles NE of US hiway 73.

When I lived in NC I lived near I-85,40 & 29. It was where they split from each other. In S FL I'm about 3 short blocks from US 1 and 1 mile from I-95.

I forgot to mention that I am located just about exactly between where U.S. 27 and U.S. 441 split... about 20 miles to my north and 10 to 15 miles to my south(east).

I grew up along I-90 in northern Illinois. Have a nice slide somewhere of the first car (the governor) passing under our closest overpass that day in 1956, I think. Today we live 20 minutes from I-10 and I-17.

By the way...I-17 out of town today..heading toward the mountains! Forget it. A large boat fell off a trailer and has traffic backed all the way up to the ocean (and you can imagine how far that is from Phoenix!)

The closest interstate to me is I-45, which is the former US 75 route. Also in Houston are I-10 and I-610, and US 59, US 290, and US90 and 90A. US 59 in the coming years is going to be upgraded to interstate standards and numbered I-69 (NO JOKES PLEASE!!! )

Well lets see....I live between US 78 and I-20...only about 1/2 mile from each.

Interstates 75 and 85 and US Hwys 27, 29, 41, and 278 all come within 20 miles of Douglasville (I'm 19 miles due west of Atlanta).

I have Interstates 5, 405, 15, 10, and 8 that I can think of off top; as well as State Routes (aka highways) 1, 22, 241, 261, and 133, 605, and 805. ;)

Where I grew up in Bedford Pa, I-70 and I-76 go right through. So I could follow I-70 all the way to Davids house! The venerable US-30 which goes all the way across the country goes through Bedford, as does US 220 which runs from the PA/NY state line, all the way down to the Carolinas.

Here in Williamsport, we have the same US 220, and US 15. I-180, which is a 30 mile spur off of
I-80 comes into town. Everyone knows that I-80 goes all the way across the country too, I think from New York City to San Francisco.

30 miles to the north is US-6 which is another historic east-west route.

Well, hmmm.... this is an interesting topic and might I add, a good one ... I like this ...

Interstates
I-26 and the recently created I-526 (loops around the Charleston Peninsula)

Highways
US highway 78 (JetMaxx, sound familiar?) is the closest to me (only 3½ miles ENE) ... there are US 52, and US 176 (Goose Creek).
State highways - SC 642 (Dorchester Rd) the closest ...

FYI, I-26 starts in Charleston, SC and ends past Asheville, NC ...
US Hwy 78 starts in Charleston, SC and ends in Memphis, TN ...
US Hwy 176 starts in Goose Creek, SC and ends in Hendersonville, NC ...
And last but not in the very least, US Hwy 52 starts in Charleston, SC and ends on the North Dakota/Canadian Border ...

Well lets see......Here where i am at in town we have US36 which begins at about the OH/PA line and goes west to CO..............The closest interstate to me is i71..................As far as when i lived in DE had US9 and US 113...........In Ocean City,MD i lived about a block away from US50 which runs from the Boardwalk in Ocean City,MD west to Sacramento, CA......................Now as for the DC area Like stormraiser said (which i wouldnt mind knowing the town it was you were in) I lived in a few locations and one location i was about a minute walk to i95(Beltway)(btw they have added i495 back to the signs along the i95 stretch of the DC beltway making all of it again i495) in Temple Hills,MD and as well in New Carrolton,MD about a stone throw away from i95 and US50 was very close to me as well this was back in the mid70s.....I as well lived in another town called Bowie,MD (Pointer Ridge) and there i could almost spit out my window onto US301...............And way way back when i lived in Philadelphia i was close to i95 and i76.......BTW i was born within view of i95 in South Philly.....................

I'm live where I-45 ends and US-87 begins...or is it where US-87 ends and I-45 begins?

Anyway, both are joined by Broadway Avenue in Galveston. If you drive from the mainland over the causeway onto the island via 45, it becomes Broadway/US-87, which runs west to east and then branches into a small section of the Seawall which in turn branches into Ferry Road/US-87. Take the ferry across to Port Bolivar and you're still on US-87.

Kinda funny about highways like that US87 Duck........In Delaware the US9 I mentioned Starts in Nothern NJ and goes to Cape May NJ (which btw is known as The Garden State Parkway) at the Ferry in Cape May and then continues where the Ferry lets off in Lewis,DE and finally Ends at US13 in Delaware...............They have talked about for years building a bridge across the Delaware Bay from Cape May,NJ to Lewis,DE connecting that highway there but Delaware wont go for it because of the town of Lewis,DE...............

The major Interstate near me is I-95, but that does run through Pennsylvania, not NJ. I'm not that far from the NJ Turnpike and I take the Atlantic City Expressway to work everyday. Route 322 runs from the Jersey shore into Pennsylvania.

I-10 runs through Beaumont.

There's a bunch of highways that go through Beaumont. To name a few - U.S. hwy. 69, U.S. hwy. 96, U.S. hwy. 105, U.S. hwy. 90, state hwy. 87.

Duck...I think that's SH 87 and not US 87. If I'm not mistaken, US 87 is in central & west Texas and New Mexico.
