Storm of the Month: January 2008 [ Nominations ]

#1 Postby HURAKAN » Sun Feb 24, 2008 5:05 pm

I have had this idea for a long time now and decided to put it before the Moderator board of S2k, of which I'm a member. At the end of every month all members of S2k will have the opportunity to nominate storms that they think should be the "Storm of the Month." After two days of nomination. A three-day election period will proceed.

Although there will be an emphasis on tropical systems, especially named ones, non-tropical storms and severe storms that are worth mentioning could be included. This could include tornadic outbreaks, northeasters, Mediterranean canes, polar lows, and more.

At the end of the year, all twelve elected systems will compete for "Storm of the Year."

"It's your nomination & your election!"

Let the fun begin!

As a side note, you can submit the nominations directly to me or post them here. Remember, this is for January. The February Storm of the Month will be chosen at the beginning of March.

:uarrow: Miami, I will keep in mind your February nomination but I would like to have your January nomination(s)!

By the way, you can nominate more than one. All the nominations will be in the ballot for the election and one will be elected!

Miami, I already nominated that.

Maybe this should be done with PMs...

I have to go with the January 2008 tornado outbreak sequence, as it is called on Wikipedia. There was just no TC that was notable enough. Also, unless something insane happens in these final few days in Feburary, we will have another tornado outbreak next month to pick for SotM.

Going with the outbreak. That was quite impressive for January. There was nothing spectacular in the tropics to warrant a vote.

If I chose for each month in 2007, they would be:

January - Snow and ice storm across the South, Midwest and Northeast (a close vote here)

February - Mega lake-effect snow in upstate New York

March - March 1-2 tornado outbreak in the South

April - Mid-month Nor'easter with snow, flooding and severe weather

May - May 4-6 tornado outbreak in the Plains

June - Cyclone Gonu

July - Monsoon flooding in India

August - Hurricane Dean

September - Hurricane Felix

October - Flooding in Tabasco, Mexico (a close 4-way vote there)

November - Cyclone Sidr

December - Another snow and ice storm across the Midwest
