NW Pacific revised name list released

#1 Postby Chacor » Tue Feb 26, 2008 11:30 pm

The revised name list for the 2008 season in the Western North Pacific has now been released, to account for retired names (Chanchu, Bilis, Saomai, Xangsane, Durian), as well as changes to some existing entries for the Rep. of Korea due to transliteration issues.

New names, with Korean changes italicised:
Sanba for Chanchu
Maliksi for Bilis
Gaemi for Kaemi
Son Tinh for Saomai
Leepi for Xangsane
Jebi for Chebi
Mangkhut for Durian
Neoguri for Noguri
Jangmi for Changmi
Goni for Koni
Megi for Maegi

The next ten names on the list are therefore: NEOGURI, RAMMASUN, MATMO, HALONG, NAKRI, FENGSHEN, KALMAEGI, FUNG-WONG, KAMMURI, PHANFONE.

As an aside, I can already forsee the issues American weather newscasters will have when saying "Typhoon Gaemi". :roflmao:

It won't be a problem as American weather newscasters don't cover the WPac. :ggreen:

They do when it threatens American bases on Guam or in Japan, though, I thought?

The Weather Channel might give it a 10 second mention.

I don't think anything will top "Typhoon Longwang".

They already had a "Typhoon Gay." Five of them, I think. One was a really interesting Category 5 basin-crosser, so it was one of the rare named tropical cyclones to hit India.

TY Gay in 1992 was even more interesting from a US standpoint because besides tracking over Guam the ET remnants resulted in high winds and heavy rains on the US West Coast into AZ and also were involved in the formation of the intense December 1992 nor'easter along the East Coast.

I've sometimes heard it referred to as "The Storm That Wouldn't Die".

Also, I know names were rarely retired, but I would have retired Super Typhoon Gay in 1989. Not only for tracking across the Bay of Bengal and hitting India as a Category 5, but also for being the only intense typhoon to strike Thailand.

It'd probably be pronounced the same way as "Maemi". I think Maemi was pronounced "May-em-ee".
