Re: TX winter wx thread: Winter Precipitation Thurs/Fri?
I'm glad you guys in Texas are getting snow. Can someone take some pics for this Florida resident that hasn't seen snow in 10 years.

I think they are talking about the next front that is racing down the plains - look at the low and attendant front now in Nebraska...
http://www.wunderground.com/
It's got some really chilly air behinfd it....the upper energy from that system is supposed to add some lift to the area later....
Unless I interpret it wrong....

Ah, okay. I saw this feature on a satellite loop yesterday and was amazed at how quickly it was blowing down the plains. Looks like it could be a possibility.

Re: TX winter wx thread: Winter Precipitation Thurs/Fri?
The sun was out here earlier too but it clouded up again real quickly. I have to go out in this cold today. It's the one year anniversary of my niece's husband death. He was the one that was injured in iraq and died from his injuries.
Frack, at least you're north of I-10. I'm about 10 miles south or so.

...LIGHT SNOW POSSIBLE NORTH OF I-10 TODAY...
A STRONG COLD FRONT THAT MOVED ACROSS THE AREA LAST NIGHT IS
USHERING A MUCH COLDER AIRMASS INTO THE REGION. TEMPERATURES IN
THE 40S THIS MORNING WILL SLOWLY FALL INTO THE 30S BY THIS
AFTERNOON. THIS WILL CREATE A POTENTIAL FOR SOME LIGHT SNOW TO
OCCUR ACROSS PORTIONS OF SOUTHEAST TEXAS AND LOUISIANA.
AREAS OF LIGHT RAIN AND DRIZZLE CONTINUE TO OVERSPREAD THE REGION
EARLY TODAY. BY LATER THIS MORNING...THE LIGHT RAIN AND DRIZZLE
MAY BEGIN MIXING WITH LIGHT SNOW AS FAR SOUTH AS THE I-10
CORRIDOR.
AREAS MOST LIKELY TO SEE ANY LIGHT SNOW WILL BE ACROSS INTERIOR
SOUTHEAST TEXAS AND CENTRAL LOUISIANA...GENERALLY ALONG AND NORTH
OF A KOUNTZE TO MARKSVILLE LINE. IN THESE AREAS...LIGHT RAIN AND
DRIZZLE MAY BEGIN MIXING WITH LIGHT SNOW LATER THIS MORNING...BEFORE
POTENTIALLY CHANGING OVER TO ALL LIGHT SNOW BY THIS AFTERNOON.
SHOULD SNOW OCCUR...LITTLE OR NO SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ARE
ANTICIPATED. SOME LIGHT DUSTINGS OF SNOW ARE POSSIBLE ON ELEVATED
SURFACES AND GRASSY AREAS IN INTERIOR SOUTHEAST TEXAS AND CENTRAL
LOUISIANA.
TRAVEL IS NOT EXPECTED TO BE IMPACTED AS GROUND TEMPERATURES
REMAIN TOO WARM FOR ANY SNOW TO ACCUMULATE ON AREA ROADWAYS.
PLEASE LISTEN TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR YOUR LOCAL MEDIA FOR THE
LATEST UPDATES ON THIS POTENTIAL WINTER WEATHER SITUATION.

Well it finally snowed at my farm for about 6-7 minutes..... Better than nothing... Very pretty while it lasted... Maybe we will get a little more but it dosen't look like it..
Hopefully once the sun comes out it warms just enough for the next pool of cold upper air working it's way towards se texas to helps destabalize the atmosphere and get a little convection going..

Awsome Sat. image loop!
Look up into western Ok. and you can see that next potential thumping barreling down on N. Texas...
We had about 4.5 inches here in North Frisco. I am sure that there was major compaction with this event. The snow flakes at one point were bigger than silver dollars and sounded like snowballs hitting your car windshield... If it weren't for the weight and overall wetness of the flakes we would have seen upwards of 8" at my house...

Re: TX winter wx thread: Winter Precipitation Thurs/Fri?
Single mention in Texas AFDs (from NWS FWD) about the Linder afternoon convective snow shower scenario
SNOW CLEARING THE TRACON...WITH MVFR CIGS HOLDING ON ALONG/EAST OF
I-35 FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT COUPLE HOURS. OTHERWISE VFR WILL PREVAIL
WITH WINDS NEAR 15KT. ONLY CONCERN IN THE FORECAST TODAY IS
REGARDING THIS AFTERNOON AS AIRMASS BECOME UNSTABLE WITH HEATING
BENEATH EXTREMELY COLD MID/UPPER LEVEL LOW. EXPECT CUMULUS FIELD
WITH CONVECTIVE SNOW RAIN/SLEET/SHOWERS TO DEVELOP BY MID
AFTERNOON...PRIMARILY OVER THE NW TRACON. THIS IS SOMEWHAT SIMILAR
TO NOV 30 2006 WHEN LATE AFTERNOON CONVECTIVE SNOW SHOWERS
DEVELOPED. WILL SHOW A TEMPO FOR -SN FROM 20-24Z TO HINT AT THIS
POSSIBILITY AND WILL NOT INCLUDE ANY RESTRICTIONS TO VSBY ATTM.
LATER SHIFTS CAN CONTINUE TO MONITOR THIS POTENTIAL. OTHERWISE WILL
SHOW DECREASING WINDS AND GENERALLY SKC OVERNIGHT. TR.92

Wouldn't it be something if the Dallas area received accumulating snow 3 days in a row...IN MARCH!
Now if only some of that could sustain its way down to Central TX tonight.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORT WORTH TX
1150 AM CST FRI MAR 7 2008
.AVIATION...
THE ONLY TRICKY PART OF TAF PERIOD IS THE CHANCE FOR LIGHT SNOW AT
DFW AS FRONT ACROSS OKLAHOMA DIPS INTO CWA THIS AFTERNOON.
FRONT WOULD PROVIDE SOME LIFT...AND TEMPERATURES WOULD BE
CONDUCIVE TO SNOW DEVELOPMENT. HOWEVER...I PULLED THE SNOW TEMPO
DUE TO A DRY LAYER ABOVE THE SURFACE. ANY POSSIBLE PRECIP. SHOULD
BE IN THE FORM OF RAIN. IF IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO FALL AS SNOW...DO
NOT FEEL IT WILL HAVE ANY IMPACT ON TAF SITES. SKIES WILL CONTINUE
TO CLEAR BEHIND FROPA...BUT WINDS WILL HAVE TO BE MONITORED FOR ANY
INCREASES BEHIND THE FRONT. TRENDS ACROSS OKLAHOMA HAVE BEEN
INDICATING SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OF 15 TO 20 MPH. TOMORROW
MORNING...INSERTED WIND SHIFT TO THE EAST AROUND 15Z. OTHER THAN
THAT...VFR CONDITIONS WILL PREVAIL THROUGHOUT TAF PERIOD.

Don't know if it is rain, snow, sleet or virga, but the afternoon convection is moving through the Hill Country now.

I don't see any stations reporting anything, so I think you're correct.

Well, I once again missed out on seeing a north Houston snowfall.
It would have happened had precipitation still been around after sunrise, but unfortunately all the showers began to dry up to my north and west and were not able to reach me. It was pretty sad to see! All I ended up getting out of this "event" was some mist and may be a few "melting" snowflakes just as the sun was coming up. In the end, nothing really all that impressive down here.
