1. Typhoon Tip 870mb*?

#1 Postby Category 5 » Fri Mar 07, 2008 8:45 pm

Without recon in most basins, theres speculation on whether there has been a Tropical Cyclone stronger then Tip or not. Most recently Monica with estimates as low as 869mb and Dvorak numbers that went off the charts. Since speculation is half the fun I figure this might be interesting. Post a storm/storms you think might have possibly surpassed Tip, and please, try to back it up a little bit, since this is the granddaddy of them all.

Anything in 1997: There were three with 872 hPa, and I think one might have been higher. I am not a big fan of Angela and Gay, I think they are a little biased because of the tiny eyes. All in all, however, I think Tip is probably the king.

If you're talking about Dvorak pressure estimates, Cimaron in 2006 received a T7.5 from Gallina at the SAB, and he said he was tempted to go T8.0 (858 mb).

Have there been any other storms that have come close to Tip's size?

Cyclone Monica was getting close. There is this one image floating around google images of a 1997 super typhoon Dvorak image that was insane. It was like the perfect shape and had a thick, full ring of the most intense convection on the scale. I wish I could find it again, it was from either Keith, Ivan, or Joan.

:uarrow: I've always thought Joan could be more intense than Tip; that image really is more impressive to me than anything taken of Tip (though there are only a few actually in existence).

Edit: Also, while perusing through the NRL archives, that picture was actually taken right when Joan became a super typhoon, although I can't find the exact image.

That's it! That has to be one of the most amazing Dvorak images around. Monica was pretty awesome too, but the convection wasn't as built around the eye like that one.

Here's Monica Dvorak:

One should read the discussion of both Joan (1997) and Angela (1995) in the appropriate ATCR from JTWC where they discuss this very issue. Angela BTW was Dvoraked at 8.3 which is higher than Tip's 8.0. JT noted that the ring of dark gray around the eye of Joan indicated tops colder than -81C.

I think Joan probably would have been around 865mb if Recon flew in...

By the way, that Monica image is actually not at "peak" intensity, although it does look ridiculously intense. The peak intensity image came from later on the 23rd, and had a full wrap-around of the most intense level of convection:

This image also looks very impressive:

That image is almost at the same time as the one I posted. Look closely at the geography around. Monica is near the Wessel islands on both. Maybe only a few hours difference.

:uarrow: The point would be that the first is in a different position.

When Monica was at her peak, I believe that was when she was near the Wessel islands. The strongest convection wasn't a full wrap around but normal-strong convection was fully around and very thick. On both our images, that's what it is like. I can't see your first image though, it doesn't show up.

Mm... Yes, it should be up... Regardless, the same image is on NRL.

Quite impressive and looks annular. 8-) Must have a central pressure of at most 880 millibars. Never seen a perfectly circular storm in my life. Joan and Ivan were close to each other, yet very intense. It was during the strongest El Nino of 1997-1998.

Super Typhoon Ginger of 1997 is quite large.

Typhoon Marge in 1951 is the second biggest typhoon on record.

I believe the diameter was 780 miles, which is a distant second.
