Interstate & U.S. Highways through your area

Another thing about SH 87 is that during Hurricane Allen I believe, the storm surge washed upon the road and took large chunks out of it. The damage extended for miles down the road. Rather than rebuild it (only to have the surge tear it up again), TxDOT decided to close it off at High Island and open it back up SW of Port Arthur. It's very weird...if you're in High Island going on SH 87, you see the usual Road Closed signs and are prohibited from going past them, but there is no construction! Some people take ATVs or 4 wheel drive vehicles down the beach for a few miles and see the damage Allen caused. I have come across a few pics of it...it's kinda surreal.

I have enjoyed reading these posts from over the last five and a half hours.
Looks like they will keep on coming, even by those of you who have already posted once (or twice).
I would add that I lived close to I-495 (one exit south on Route 24) and two exits north of U.S. 44 (one exit south of I-495) in southeastern Massachusetts.
U.S. 44 starts in Plymouth, Massachsuetts and ends somewhere in New York, I believe, but not positive somewhere near Buffalo, New York. [I have tracked it many times in my atlas, but it is difficult to follow.] I am sure someone can give me and those that would like to know this information. Thank you in advance.
In case some of you don't know... Even numbers in front of the main two digit interstate number represents a "loop" - such as "I-495." Odd numbers, such as I-395 is a "spur" - they only connect to; in this case... "I-95"; not connecting back up with "I-95."

Thanks HD...before reading this I was going to ask if you remembered where you saw the pics. I looked at all of them and it's hard to believe that SH 87 was a transportation corridor since the 1860's and now look at it!! Did you read about the erosion? About 8 feet a year along that section of the coast. Interesting pics....thanks again!

Hey Stephanie, US 322 cuts diagonally across PA. It goes right thru State College (Home of PennState) which I also called home for about 10 years, and continues to Lake Erie. From there, you have to go by amphibious vehicle to canada.

Growing up in FL, I had US 41 and US 301 within 5 miles west of me. Five miles west of me was I-75. Incidentally Sarasota was the southernmost point of US 301.
When I moved to Richmond, I was ten miles off of I-95. US 301 was still very close to me and I used it to go to Maryland.
I-70 is just to my south now. I could probably walk to it.

Well storm raiser i know exactly where you are talking about and if i am correct if she had a Bowie address (Zip) then she lived in the same development that i did (Pointer Ridge) My grandmother worked for PG County in Upper Marlboro at 911 (before it was moved to its current location) back in the 70s to 82.........................Like i had said i could spit out my window onto US301 but i was as well about a 3 minute walk to 214..Central AVE.............I dont know how good your memory is of the place but if you do then you will remember the big blue water tower that sits to the right of 301 south and to the right of 214 westbound.................I was right next to it!.....................I drove through there a little over a year ago going to my aunts in Davidsonville and what a change from when i lived there......................And btw it sure as hell took them long enough to do what they did to 214...................But of course now just about every piece of land is developed from Largo through Kettering and all the way just about to 301.....................When i first lived there was just about nothing on that highway from 202 to 301 on Central Ave except a small part of Kettering on the right side of 214 heading east and more or less nothing on the left untill you just about where at 301..................Heck for that matter 214 was a single lane road in each direction just about all the way to the DC line...................Only part that was divided was when you approached and over 301 in the Bowie area................

Actually, my mom lived about 1 mile east of 301 on 214. My grandmothers family owned a large acreage over there. If you drove down Central Avenue east, there was a sign on the left that said "Reio" that was it. (It was somewhat prominent, so you might have noticed it)They have since sold it off piece by piece. I am camping right now at Watkins Park, while helping with the Folklife Festival in DC. Yes, 214 is built up. Have you seen that large Church they just built down towards Bowie? It makes these large Catholic Cathedrals look small. I can remember when they moved the county building. We went on a school field trip to tour it after it opened. Upper Marlboro is scary too. It is still a nice main street area, with all of the old buildings, but it is a strip of Bail Bonds "stores" instead of the nice little home town feel it used to have. The funeral home that was used by the townspeople is now a realtor. Ah, sometimes "progress" isn't all that good.

I also have really enjoyed this topic. I am about 1 mile north of U.S. Highway 60 and about 10 miles south of I-44.
Hey mamadude... doesn't US 60 come all the way to Va.Beach, VA? I remember driving on it while on Spring Break and thinking...this runs by my house. I think it was in your area.
