This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Super-rare 1960's satellite images found! Donna, Flora, etc.

[edited in 2013. Apparently these images were showing up as REAL in Google Images, so yeah, best I delete this thread.]

Before I even look at this topic, I call April Fools. When I read the title, I zipped down here to write the post.

Unless the link starts working, I'm not buying either.

link doesn't work. nice try at april fool's though

the first Donna image is clearly an edited version of Floyd...

oh and did I mention that Donna occurred BEFORE the first satellite was launched? xD :wink:

EDIT: well, the first weather satellite was launched in April 1960, but my point remains, highly unlikely that satellite took pics of Donna.

And the Flora image.... the stratocumulus arrangement to the west of the cyclone looks unrealistic for an Atlantic hurricane. A strong midlatitude storm that could theoretically steer Flora would leave CU streaks parallel to each other and starting offshore. The stratocu does look like something associated with an EPAC storm though. ;)

Sorry, just had to critique these.

Cy I told you not to use Donna. :wink:

I know most of these

Cleo = Irene 2005
Ethel = Nate sideways
Donna = Edouard (edited a bit)
Donna 2 = Michelle
Flora = A severely edited Alberto from 2000.

Gah, ok you guys got me. Still it was worth a shot, right?

Better than just faking some advisory on Tropical Depression 1. I don't think anyone can top Sandy's masterpeice a few months ago.

Category 5 is exactly right on all images.

You got me. Great job.
I'm pretty amazed by people being able to look at those and say, oh, that's Michelle.

The first "known" image that I know of is from October 5, 1954. It's from a depression/storm that hit on the 3rd near the US-Mexico border...

Probably deserves its own thread so as not to confuse it with the bogus pictures above..

Pretty impressive considering Sputnik wasn't launched until 1957 and the first weather satellite until 1960.

:uarrow: Sounding rockets have been taking pictures from decent atmospheric heights since several years before Sputnik. In fact, that very image is located on the Wiki-Commons site at this adress: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... repair.jpg

I know there is a radar image of Flora of 1963. It dumped up to 120 inches of rain in some areas.
